Just came into a Springfield XD40; I have no experience with this round, but the features and ergos of the weapon appeal to me (old school 1911 user). Would like to hear others recommendations on ammo that both feed reliably and offers acceptable terminal ballistics. If you have experience with this specific weapon that would be a plus. Thanks in advance.

Respect,

Wes

I would recommend picking up several boxes of different types of bonded hollowpoints, such as Speer Gold Dot, Fed HST etc. and just trying them out. Now way to know what your weapon will prefer without just spending the money. Personally I carry gold Dots.

Now that sounds promising, as I only plan to have to use it on big, stupid, deranged guys

Gold Dots for everything is my usual recommendation. I prefer the heaviest bullets possible for a given caliber. That means 180 grain in .40.

I have Federal Premium "Law Enforcement" Tactical Bonded 165 grain in my M&P 40 compact. No issues with that stuff, good feeding, ejecting, expansion, penetration, and weight retention from what I've seen.

Re: 40 S&W - Ammo Recommendations

To reiterate, the already stated, you should consider the grains and not just the brand. 155, 165, and 180 grain are common for .40S&W. The key will be to find the balance of speed, energy, penetration and felt recoil. It will be assumed that candidates have already been tested and fed reliably through your weapon.

Consider trying Speer Gold Dots, Federal Hydra-Shok, Remington Golden Saber, various Corbon, and Winchester Ranger T-series. All of these rounds have data sheets you can review, established favorable track records as well as ample availability.

There are other rounds you could and should try. The bottom line will be choosing the round that best suits your intended use, which u did not specify too clearly.

Good Luck.
