Can I get some recommendations? I'm looking at the Silencerco Osprey. I really like the offset design allowing use of the sights. I'll be mounting it on a Sig P229

And can anyone recommend a good dealer to look into prices at?

Re: .40S&W suppressor

major malfunction.com

The web site is out dated, but they are the largest silencer dealer in nation. I have .45 FDE osprey on order from them now. Have you considered doing a .45 can so you can use more calibers on it. Performance wont be 100% but silencer co web page has videos of just such tests. It may be good enough for you to consider.

Re: .40S&W suppressor

I did entertain the idea but I don't own a .45 anymore and don't see myself getting on that I'd put a suppressor on. Really, aside from a .22 I doubt I'll supres any other pistol that this or possibly a 9mm glock. $700 seems pretty reasonable.

Any other places?

Re: .40S&W suppressor

I have a 40cal Osprey on my HK tactical and it works great. You will get a lot of blowback with the 40 suppressed so make sure you wear eye protection.

Re: .40S&W suppressor

Thompson machine? Truly sorry to hear it. An aluminum blast chamber? In 2011? Aluminum is fair for some of the stack, but blast chamber for .40? $450 seems too high. Just because a can doesn't need a Neilson is not always good. Think GEMTECH Blackside first out without a Neilson, didn't last long.

DP, .40 is a really interesting caliber. It is never subsonic, always supersonic, even with heavy bullets. Whereas you can use a .45 can, don't. Too different. You need to capture, the maximum muzzle blast, too much trailing gas jet will follow out of a .45 can. Your going to have SS projectile crack and blast with .45 can. That back gas KY talks about is the much higher gas pressures of the .40. Go with a dedicated .40 can.

Re: .40S&W suppressor

Yes you can, no doubt, and you can reload them. IMO, ballistics are compromised, go .45acp. If it was me and I was truly dedicated to a .40, I would go titanium, with a Neilson, a tunable Neilson.

Re: .40S&W suppressor

I think that about covers it...

Forget the subsonics as the gas volume is greatly reduced. Judge a can with supersonics.

Listen to the .40 supersonics at 1:35-6 seconds...through a .45 can. Loud blast, even with Vids like this not capturing the blast impulse anywhere nearly as loud as is it. Better than nothing, yep, as good as a dedicated .40 in supersonic, nope.

Re: .40S&W suppressor

Why would you want to shoot supersonic though it? 180s federals are sub sonic and $13 a box. I only shot the supersonics to show how much better it is to shoot subsonic though it. If I point the supersonics to the ground and fire off a couple of shots it's still stupid quiet.

Re: .40S&W suppressor

Two complaints about that video- #1, what is up with the strange picture movement at the end? Holy crap, made me feel like I was drunk. #2, shooting at water is one of the basic gun safety no-no's- there is a much higher probability of a ricochet.

Anyway- I hand load most of my .40 ammo and usually keep it 900-1000fps for 180gr bullets. SO my loads are almost never supersonic. But in reality, the use for the suppressor is just range use so I'm not too worried about if the ammo is super sonic or sub sonic. My search it based more around build and construction quality of suppressor, being able to use factory sights and how well it works for each given situation- in other words I'd like one that works well all-around since I don't have a focus on Super or Sub.

I'm inclined to go the .40 version route; I really don't intend on owning a .45 that I'd want to suppress so the trade off of some suppression for the ability to use it on a caliber which I don't even own anymore, or want to use it on just doesn't make sense.

SO is it agreed that the Osprey 40 seems to fit the bill for me? Quality design/construction/build/materials, fair price and good support?

It was filmed with a lil handheld. I've since bought a Canon 600D, it takes much better video.

As for the water, It's a huge creek bed on the other side followed by trees. The round has no place to go.

And yes, if you plan to never own and suppress a .45 I think the SilencerCo in .40 will work just fine for you. I know myself a lil better and figured I'd end up sooner or later with a .45

Again 180gs from walmart will run perfect! It was my main reason for getting one in .40caliber.

Re: .40S&W suppressor

I own an AAC Evo .40 and love it. I used it on my USP Tactical .40. I only shot 180gr FMJ through the suppressor. Shooting it dry was ok. It wasn't quite what I expected though. Wet, holy crap. HUGE difference! Put a stupid grin on my face.

We still need to get these two together!

Okay gotcha

I'm not going to say I'll never own a .45 again (I have had one before), but I do not see myself owning one that I'd suppress. It will either be something sub/ultra compact where I don't want barrel hanging out past the slide, or something Wilson or Ed Brown built that won't have a threaded barrel anyway.

And besides, if for some reason I end up wanting to suppress a .45... I'll just buy another one in .45. But that is just so unlikely.

When I do buy .40 ammo, I usually get the federal white box stuff from wally world. I usually only do that when it's time to replenish my stock of brass. Either way I almost exclusively shoot sub-sonic ammo out of my .40's simply because I like the heavier bullet.
