45 ACP bullets

Anyone have any suggestion on inexpensive FMJ 230 gr. or 185 gr. round nose bullets for 45 ACP? I've been shooting rifles so long I know what I like but just now getting into pistol and pin point accuracy isn't an issue. My bone stock old 1911 won't feed hollow points but eats round nose just like it was designed to do. Dillon has some rounds that aren't too expensive but when I load for pistol I like to load a lot and blast away without costing a fortune.

I've used Oregon Trail cast lead, but they are dirty and don't always work the best. However, they were extremely accurate for me. I just finished off a box of 250 Berry's 185 SWC's, but they were not where I wanted them to be accuracy wise for some reason. Next I will try the Berry's flat nose 185 grainers. I'm interested to see what some of the other posts recomend....

I've been looking at the Berry's and all I want from my pistol is to hit center mass at about 10 to 30 feet. My rifles are a different story, I won't dead on accuracy from them. I just started shooting the pistol and really like to just shoot it so accuracy isn't that big of an issue but on the other hand I don't want to use crap either. I've used Sierra's in my rifles for decades and I'm happy with them but they are a little too pricey for just punching holes in paper for the heck of it. My pistol just won't feed hollow points or flat nose so I'm stuck with using round nose. I think I might try some of the Berry 185 or 230, they are a lot cheaper than Sierra.

I shoot these in my XD and 1911, IDP #4-XD.

That sounds like what I'm looking for, are they jacketed or lead? And like I said before if they ain't round nose they won't run in my pistol. Also where would one buy these rounds? Never mind the last question I just clicked the link, thanks.

Teggy1, do these feed ok in a standard 1911 with no modifications to the gun? One more question, all I have is a Sierra loading manual and I've been using Unique powder for my pistol loads and they work great. Do you have a source of load data without me doing a hours worth of searching the internet.

Old Salt, for center of mass the berry's will most likely shoot fine. I've used them in 9mm and .357 with good results, the 185 SWC are the only ones that have been not up to snuff in my gun. Also, the cast lead bullets shoot well and are cheap, but seemed to build up lead in my chamber so after 100 rounds or so I needed a thorough cleaning. From here on out I'm shooting the electro-pated bullets in my auto's and the lead in my wheelguns.

Thanks for the info, I think I'll give the Berry's a shot either the 185 or 230 round nose's. One thing for sure is that shooting a pistol is a lot cheaper than a long gun just in the cost of powder.

Another brand to try is Dardas cast bullets (www.dardascastbullets.com). He's located in Michigan and does a great job. I shoot the 185 SWC and 230 round nose out of my TRP ... Highly recommended!!!!!!

master cast has always done me right.

cast bullets are the way to go if you want to practice. Find a good caster for cheap that ships in the USPS flat rate boxes and, you're golden. I used to cast them myself but honestly, I don't want to take the health risks with casting lead bullets even though I have done it in the past.

regarding leading, I haven't had any issues to speak of in my XD, and haven't fired enough through my 1911 to give an accurate statement on leading, although no other issues to report either.

I used to shoot A LOT on the weekends, roughly 300 rnds on a Sunday afternoon, haven't had any issue with leading in my XD. But, I don't run em that hard. These are my plinking/practice rounds. I don't remember exactly, but I want to say around 5-5.5 grns. of Bullseye(I'd have to find my load sheet).

Thumbs was up for missouri bullet co. The IDP#4-XD shoots awesome out of my xd & 1911. Shoots so good im contemplating not even using semi-wads anymore. They will ship up to 2000 for the same price in a flat rate box. It gives my postman the fits, now he just backs in the driveway and rings my doorbell. Its $39.50 per 500

These are excellent quality bullets and it's definitely a good deal for real "jacketed" bullets and not just plated. Get some people together to make a big order and it's even cheaper. I shoot the 230's in .45 and the 180's in 10mm.

I've tried the Berry's before I found these and was disappointed. Until I found the right load depth for my gun with the Berry's I had some feeding issues, which is to be expected with any bullet, but when a round would jam with the Berry's it would push the bullet way deeper into the case. I started measuring them and they were only .451" at the very base of the bullet and got smaller as I measured up the bullet. Some got down to .448". I usually just crimp enough to remove the bell but had to crimp the hell out of the Berry's to keep them from getting pushed into the case. Those were the only ones I ever bought so maybe I just got some out of a bad lot but it was enough to send me looking somewhere else.

I've used Berry's, Ranier and Precision Delta all with good results. Prices were about $100-$120 per thousand.
