4895 powder question

Re: 4895 powder question

Don't rely on that chart for anything other than ballpark. There's nothing objective about it, it's purely a listing. The difference between 1 power and the next is maybe 10% burn rate differences for 1 thing, but in the opposite direction it might be 22%.

For plinking light loads I will interchange the H4985 and I4895 in my 30-06, but those loads are usually min charges already.

Re: 4895 powder question

I have been loading with canister IMR4895 for 10 years, and if I work up until the extractor groove starts growing, that threshold is consistent within 1% from lot number to lot number over the years.

But when I buy bulk IMR4895, each lot can be very different. Some jugs I have now act more like H322. That is much faster than canister IMR4895.

H4895 should be canister grade, but my latest Quickload revision is moving it from faster than the IMR4895 to slower than IMR4895.

Re: 4895 powder question

If the H4895 is surplus from Radford AAP it is most likely slower. They had problems back in 80s with it and I don't know how long it last but last LC load I pulled and so much in it, it was compressed to make velocity.
