I am considering getting my first kestrel and going with the 4DOF model. Is the ballistic calculator as accurate as applied ballistics? Is this software in the kestrel as as usable as the applied ballistics?
I used the 4DOF software on my phone for 2 years. It worked exceptionally well when trued with Hornady's "axial form factor". I'm now using a Kestrel elite 5700 only because it blue tooths with my Sig binos. AB works as well as 4DOF once I got it trued by way of velocity manipulation. I think the majority of software programs work well. Most of the issues come from user error,
Sorry, I should have dug up a link to a 4DOF thread. To me 4DOF is a PITA to get tuned, but once you do, then it seems to be spot on, expecially if you manage to tune the Zero Angle, and the Axial Form Factor. Accurate measurements at your close and far target. "Looks like 750 yards" is not going to cut it if the actual is 730 or 770. The farther you can go to get your far distance target the better.
