Does anyone have experience using 5.56 suppressors on 22LR? I am building a CZ Varmint/Precision Trainer to match my 6.5CM Sniper Rifle. I had originally thought of getting the AAC Element2, but the idea crossed my mind that if I got a 5.56 suppressor I could interchange it between my AR and the CZ trainer. The suppressor I have in mind is the YHM 5.56 QD Ti. I cannot think of a reason it would not work (.22 vs .223), and I thought the suppression on the 22LR would be quite significant due to the high volume.

It will work but my understanding is that because a 22 is so dirty that it will carbon up a sealed can. In terms of safe and will it work, absolutely.

Fouling the can with 22LR ammo, that makes sense. I suppose that's why AAC makes the Element2 user serviceable. Can anyone suggest a 5.56 can that allows dis-assembly for cleaning? I would love to buy one can for both applications.

Another thing to think about is if you ever decide that you want to suppress a 22LR pistol, the YHM 556 can isnt going to work very well, if at all due to the size/weight/mounting system.

Re: 5.56 Suppressors on 22LR

I run my 5.56 suppressor on my 10/22 all the time.
All the carbon and other "Dirty" fouling get blown out after shooting one or two 30 round magazines of 5.56 through it.

The only issue I have is lead deposits on my flash hiders.
The 5.56 ammo vaporizes the lead deposits that the .22lr ammo leaves behind and the back pressure causes it to accumulate on my flash hider mount.

Bottom line, .22lr suppressors work better than 5.56 suppressors of rimfires.
If you don't want the extra expense, expect to spend extra time on maintenance.
