5.56x42 experience

The 5.56x 42 reportedly runs the 80grn bullets faster. I like the idea of a 80grn going 3000fps from a 20" barrel. I think this setup would work well without going rediculously high on pressure, which is where i have the best luck with accuracy. The valk does not have the same capacity. But maybe it would work fine.

From the little bit of research that I did shows those velocities while running an OAL of 2.295". You should be able to get close to that with Valkyrie in a 20" and have multiple barrel sources. Just a thought.

Has anyone used this chambering? Im looking for a small frame ar with the 6.8 parent case as i have quite a few available.

Have a look on AR Performance website, it details some of the differences between it and the 224V as well as some load data and velocities. Do not take the load data as a starting point they should be listed as max if I remember correctly. If you Google the round there will be an extensive amount of info from threads on 68forums as well.
And yes you are correct it has more capacity and greater velocity potential than the 224V, it is only necked down with some trimming of the neck the 224V has the shoulder pushed back so it is optimized for running the 90smk at AR mag length. Just depends on what your needs are, one is still considered a cat the other is in its teething stages but has factory ammo.

Reviving this. Looking at this or perhaps tac6. I think its possible to get that berger 83 to 3000fps if the arperformance website is to be believed. Is anyone getting the valk 80s to 3000?

Go to the Valkyrie facebook pages and look for CJ James. He is pushing the 80gr to 3000 out of a 24" barrel using H4895.
The x42 is apx 100fps faster. 3000 out of a 20". We have been doing it since 2007. 28gr N540 Jason Peterson shot a 4.5" group at 1200 yds at Strategic Edge in Tenn 5-6 years ago with that load. BTW there is a 5.56x42 facebook page too.

What brass is best. What is the best route for dies? Right now i can find starline and s and b brass.
Should i just get a redding 6.8 spc full length bushing die and neck down, then use the .22 ppc seating die as has been posted elsewhere?

The Hornady 6.8 brass is very good but heavier than most so less capacity, the Hornady brass made by S&B is also very good and has more capacity.
If you can find any of the original Silver State Armory brass I allways liked it before Nosler bought them out haven't tried any post buy out. I've still got 10, 100 count bags of it stashed.

Now after SSA was purchased by Nosler I would say S&B is the toughest and best brass out there. Try calling CH4D and ask if they have any 22/6.8 dies. Hornady can make a set but not sure how much they charge. Whidden Gunworks in Georgia is another. If not you can use 224 Valkyrie dies to neck the brass down in one step using imperial size wax but you will need to hold the die up off the shell holder to keep from changing the shoulder angle. You can also seat the bullets with the Valkyrie dies . After the initial forming and trimming you can use a 6.8 bushing die with a .248-.250 bushing.

Got setup and shot today. Running the 75 eld m at 3006 fps. Looks to be sub 1/2 moa, but needs more rounds to verify. Easily sub moa. Shot a nice 500 yard group, but it came apart in the wind at 800. Was still moa, but was 2mils of wind in 10-12 mph. So far im happy with it. More rounds will tell.

This round is pretty sweet. Still running the 75s at 3000 fps. I would say its right around 1/2 -3/4 moa. The recoil is badass, but spotting impacts at 800+ is a pickle. The brass prep sucks, but now that im up and going its no big deal. I think if i had it to do again i would go 24" valkyrie because of the brass prep, but im not dumping this one. 1000 rounds in and now the fun begins.

The 75, 80 and 88ELD handle .020-.040" jump, best accuracy is in that range so you should be able to shoot all 3 of those in the x42. I think you will get the best ballistics with the 80gr.
