Relatively recently I took 5 newbies out in 3 separate trips to the range. All want CCW and a home defense gun. The guns I had them try:

S&W Chief's Special .38
Springfield XD 9mm
Sig P226 9mm
1911 .45

AR-15 carry handle
AK-47 fixed stock
Rem 870 riot gun with recoil pad (in cool desert camo)

Note that no pimp guns were provided, as I cannot in good conscience recommend that a person use less than a 9mm or 38 for personal defense.

The newbies thought they would like semi auto handguns due to what they had seen in the movies. But they all liked the revolver best of the handguns, and they liked the 1911 least.

The newbies all thought a shotgun would be great for mowing down herds of bad guys, but they did not operate the pump competently, and they were put off by the heavy recoil of AA skeet loads.

Then they did not like the sights of the AK-47, but they did great with an AR-15. They liked the ergonomics of the AR, and the adjustable buttstock.

Conclusion: revolver and AR-15.

Re: 5 newbies and guns

Not a bad place to start....

My buddy thought he wanted an SKS, so we took a used one that was for sale to the range. After various issues with the SKS, he liked my AR much better. Didn't have enough $$$s for an AR, so sold his '06 and got an LR308A3 - dual purpose. He's happy.

Thanks for the report,

Bill

Methinks they need to be taken out one more time to truly experience the overall greatness of the .45! Any true red blooded American will learn it, love it, and demand to have it. The .45 is the only answer. Commies indeed!

Re: 5 newbies and guns

Don't disrespect the Chiefs Special. A shot in the face with a 38 special beats missed shots from any of the mentioned weapons. Not to blaspheme-but I have carried one of those for years as a backup duty weapon before I discovered the Glock 27.

Re: 5 newbies and guns

You know Switch, what you said about me not owning a "real" rifle is the single biggest thorn in my ass here at the Hide. When I first joined here I was living at home and had a .338 RUM zeroed in at 200 yards. I read enough here about both the RUM and LM .338 cartridges so I know it had 1,000 yard potential. When I moved out, I left the rifle because a.) it was too expensive for me to feed and b.) the recoil was way too heavy for me. I figured I could trade it in for something lighter like a .270, .308, or .30-06. I waited too long and my dad sold it. Anyways, ever since I been looking to get into long range shooting with a varmint rifle either in .22-250 or .220 Swift. I know realisticly I can only expect reasonable accuracy at a max of 500 yards due to the overly light bullet. But I just haven't learned to budget my time yet and get to a gun shop and check out rifles. I know there's always GunBroker, but I don't want to end up with a rifle that doesn't fit me.

Re: 5 newbies and guns

Oh well not all is lost I can still reach out to 200 yards with my shotgun with 24" rifled barrel when I use sabot slugs. Course I get like 3-4 groups.

Kind of lame that I have legally been able to buy long guns for 2 years and have yet to buy a centerfire rifle. Oh well Rome wasn't built in a day and in October when I'm 21 I get my Romy from my parents.

Re: 5 newbies and guns

Maser, don't sweat the small chit mang. Get a 6.5 Grendel. Low recoil, flat shooting, good to 1k, and it beats a .308 in performance. Or you could just get a nice SPS 308 with a good recoil absorbing stock pad, or go for a .223 SPS. Of course you will work for 1k, but at 500M you will be able to make decent groups wiht practice.

I got a few things laying around in a big box. I am sure I can find something that will befit a new rifle in .223, 6.5G, or .308 when you get one.

If you do not know your way around calibers, what makes a premium rifle, what makes a rifle accurate from hanging around here by now, you are truly lost. Something tells me that may not be the case though.

That's the same bed set my 7 yr. old daughter has! She loves Transformers, thinks they are the greatest things ever!

Re: 5 newbies and guns

You are quite right Switch about my knowledge about accuracy. I may not exactly be the brightest bulb in the knife drawer, but I really do read a lot here about extended range accuracy. I know it's not the cartridge by itself that decides accuracy, but rather the rifle itself. Such as trigger jobs and beddings. I guess I'm expecting too much from a stock rifle. I know I'm not going to get a tackdriver right out of the box. Anyways, thanks for putting up with me even though I haven't really had a taste of what you guys call long range.
