Im looking to get a good spotting scope for target shooting.
I have a cheap Big 5 20x60x60 and i can see 200 yard 338 holes
but thats maxed out. Im using a NF NXS 8-32 x56 scope and can see holes at 300 yards but i plan on going way beyond the 300 yard range.

Any comment on a scope to get and how far can a good spotting scope reach out? Like to stay in the $700.00-$1000.00 range if possible.

For your price range the Leupold gold rings are decent. If you keep an eye out for a used Kowa sometimes they can be found for that money.

I own a Leupold and it is really nice, but side by side with the Kowa we have at work it is no comparison.

I am sure there are others, but I have not found anything worth a shit that is less expensive than the Leupold gold rings, so I am curious to see what other folks recommend.

Just put the 12-40x60 Leupold Gold Ring HD up against my Bushnell Elite 20-60x80mm, Zeiss Diascope 15-45x65mm, and Vortex Razor HD 20-60x85mm today using an USAF 1951 Resolution chart at 60 yards and was amazed at my findings. I recommend either the Razor HD or Bushnell, I have to admit one is half the cost of the other and the gains are not necessarily worth it. The Razor held neck and neck at 45x with the Zeiss (Zeiss coatings are slightly better). The Leupold is honestly in it's own special market given it's size and weight. The Bushnell for the money CANNOT be beat.

Re: 50-500+ yard spotting scope

I bought a "package" deal from Creedmore that included a really nice highpower rifle scope stand, a carry bag, a 82mm Kowa, front and rear lens protection, a 25LER eyepiece, a scope cover for $1300. I bought a 20-60X eyepice for an add $300. Its a great scope kit but with the limited use I've put it through I have revised my expectations of what a scope can do.

The glass is real clear in the right conditions but if you are shooting over terrain/conditions conducive to mirage the scope is limited in its ability to view the .30 cal holes my gun makes.

I couldnt see anything in the black at 200 yards last week. I think the reason most highpower rifle shooters stick to a 25X eyepiece is because most of the time they have the advatage of rifle pits and shot spotters being used.

I love my scope and realize its value, Ive just come to the realization its use is limited. I own no rifles with scopes on them but I am looking right now I'm concerned my rifle scope will not perform better than my sotting scope. I'm hoping the different purposes of the instruments (one to view details vs one to place a shot) will make it a non issue.
