.50 Bolt Action Upper

Re: .50 Bolt Action Upper

Tried last year - ordered some part through Primal Rights (Past Dealer/Partner)
Steel BOHICA LOWER
TRIGGER
BUFFER TUBE

Paid and then for some reason BOHICA and PR split - took over 6 months to get a refund and after reading many stories about needing a mallet and dowel rod (On the BOHICA Forum)to remove spent casings - Purchased a McMillan TAC-50 instead. Had to save a bit more though - managed and awaiting delivery.

Re: .50 Bolt Action Upper

I don't have any experience with a BOHICA, but I have shot an ALS upper. I've shot numerous 50's and blast felt by the shooter and recoil compared to the AR50 & TAC50, maybe less blast than a Barrett. Barry Hamilton, president of FCSA, shoots the ALS. He has shot sub 4" groups at 1000yds with this upper and as far as I know, he has had no problems with it. I know of 1 or 2 other guys who shoot the ALS and are very happy with them.

I do. Haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. They have had QC issues in the past. Some have had to use a mallet and dowel rod in the past but that shouldn't have to happen. Chris is pretty good about standing by his products. They released a free bolt handle upgrade for the extraction issues and Chris is redesigning the bolt from what i hear to help with the extraction. They put out about 100 uppers a month and have over 3,000 in the wild. Lots of happy bohica users out there. Some uppers had to make a couple trips back to bohica to get them running right though.

I have got to shoot a Ferret upper and man they are nice! A little more spendy then the Bohica but also nicer IMHO.

ALS uppers take forever to get!!! Super accurate though and very nice from what I hear.

Zel custom are another option, Same price range as the Ferret. Only heard good things about them. They even have a Mag Fed upper that feeds from the side.

I think thats about all the major players in the .50BMG upper game. Lots of choices JUST DO YOUR RESEARCH!

Re: .50 Bolt Action Upper

I've got an ALS upper, actually took it out and fired it this weekend for the first time in a few years. They had that recall about redoing the bolt and I wanted to test it after they made the mods. Still goes bang like it should, makes big holes in the paper and makes everyone want to move just a little further from my shooting station.

Recoil this time out was way worse than I remember (like painfully bad after a few rounds) but then this was the first time I had fired it prone. Off a bench with it more set against my shoulder it's not a big deal. 'course I use a pussy pad when I'm shooting .308 prone so my view of recoil is likely different than the rest of the world.

No issues with extraction/ejection firing talon surplus junk, match ammo from ALS, 'blasting' ammo from ALS and my own handloads.

Re: .50 Bolt Action Upper

ive got 2
a MKII and a MKIII
got about 1,000 rounds down range between the two, give or take 20 or so
id have to go and look in my log book to see exactly
MKII is a standard chamber 36" fluted and the best ive shot was 7.125" 5 shot group @ 1,000 yards off the ground with a bipod
the MKIII is a match chamber bull barrel
havent had a chance to get the MKIII to a match with the moons in alignment yet
recoil isnt bad, but you get used to it
most rounds down range in 1 day was 96
when i shot lite gun it weighs 27 pounds and when i fit it up for heavy gun it weighs 47 lbs

Quick question. What around what serial number is your MKIII? Also did you ever get the bolt handle upgrade? Thanks

Re: .50 Bolt Action Upper

I had a Bohica upper and it was ok. I really can't say nothing bad about it other than spent cases were a bit rough to extract when not using Barret polished cased ammo. I used Federal black box a bit and that was hard to eject.

Personally, it was neat but if I get the bug for a .50 again, it'll be a dedicated rifle. Maybe not a MCM Tac 50 (can't afford that) but maybe an Armalite AR50 or Barrett 99.

thats the new style with the adjustable cam lobe

Re: .50 Bolt Action Upper

Just a safety note on the Zel. There is a recall on some of them due to an OOB detonation. They are a good upper but before you ever fire one just make sure it either not recalled or it has been fixed.

Re: .50 Bolt Action Upper

One more question KD185, if you don't mind..... How is this new bolt handle supposed to be adjusted. I bought mine second hand so it didn't come with a manual. Thanks again

Re: .50 Bolt Action Upper

if you look at the base of the handle theres an offset lobe
you turn the lob till it rides on the upper receiver causing a caming action then tighten it down
to little advance and the cam wont contact the receiver
to much contact and you may no be able to open the bolt completely
as you lift the handle to eject a round it pulls the shell outward
hows that for a 30 sec explanation?
