50 Cal? INSANE?

There is a .50 in my house somewhere, not sure where...

I am not going to be able to ever sleep at peace until I own a Barrett M82A. Say what you you want about it's accuracy, but it sets multiple records for sniper kills at distance.

The 50 has never been accurate -- That's why they 3 pattern long-shots...You'll also notice that their targets are never "whole"...There's a reason for that.

That being said, join the dark side -- We've got cookies.

I've had a 50 and have a 300wm...The 50 kicked a whole lot LESS than my 300wm does...220 bergers with 77 H1000 will definitely wake you up in the morning.

50s are a lot of fun and there's a ton of surplus ammo floating around!

Well, thanks for all the input. This has been an "interesting thread". Might re-think getting a fifty, IF I can get my balls back from my wife. She took them away, while I was sleeping. PS, I truly think Eric Cartmann is just spending some quality time with his son, or I truly HOPE that is the case! :).

No these are all my toys. My daughters are not into guns and storm troopers. My grandson does not have .50 yet. He has Storm Troopers but my collection is better than his.

Usually I can come up with some wise crack for just about any post but this leaves me speechless and bewildered.... And somewhat concerned when there is a 50BMG in the owners closet.

I got to fire the M82 back in the mid-late 1990's while visiting Quantico on a once in a lifetime junket with the Marine Corps League.

The recoil was not anywhere as big as I was expecting, but the noise and shit storm from the back blast were daunting to say the least. Even with my chicken-poo recoil sensitivity these days, the recoil would not be the big no (I'd rather shoot five .50BMG's than five .300WM's, at least I can expect to get my bell solidly rung/wrung by the .50).

I have no place where the caliber can be used to its advantage, I'm not gonna roll my own for cost reasons, and besides, in NY, I'd always have to be looking over my shoulder. I don't really know what it takes to build a precision accurate .50BMG, but I can tell without checking my bank account that I sure can't afford it. I honestly believe that at those distances, no rifle is accurate on its own; it takes a really savvy driver to dope the winds way out there.

So no, but a really big thanks for asking.

We will get 2 someday. Also we talked about it and me and my grandson agrees that the recoil of a .50 might be too much for a 4 year old.

I cannot comment on the sanity of Eric "The Dark Lord" Cartmann, but I've been on the range in competition against Shoots100 during matches for 50's only. Several things to dis-spell the old wives tales:
A properly shouldered 50 recoils no more than a pump 3"mag 12ga. with BB goose loads.
Accuracy--subMOA at 1K in the hands of the right shooter with bench loaded ammo.
Reloading costs about the same for feeding a 375 or 408CT. Maybe cheaper! I'm currently not affected by the "panic buying' marketplace. I purchased and stockpiled reloading necessities after being subject to shortages during the Clinton years.
Expensive hobby? Don't take up golf!

I own both an HS50 and M107A1. Neither kick very much. That's before the suppressor...still waiting on that stamp. My un-braked 308 is a bit harder of a kick.

Do I want to bring either to a field match? No.

Will the 107A1 (and the variety of very cheap surplus ammo produced for 50) destroy anything at medium to long range better than any other rifle anywhere ever? Yes. Except maybe maw-deuce.

There's a tool for each situation...50 is made for rapid target destruction. Does it well.

Anyone who is afraid of the 50 kick probably hasn't shot one, at least relatively soon from when they shot an unbraked 300.

Im reloading 50 bmg for about $1.50/rd. The Lee setup is cheap as well and you can kick out enough for a range session in an hour or so, so it doesnt take too much time. The worst part is swapping shell holders, ram prime, and dies on one press. If you had 3-4 separate presses it would go a lot quicker.

The 50 bmg is not a "practical" gun but thats the fun of it. A dirtbike cant get you to work very easily. A ski boat isnt much good for fishing. A shelby cobra has poor fuel economy. Who cares, they are fun. 10 shots of a 50 bmg will put a smile on your face like no other.
