i came across an ar50 a while back for a deal i couldnt pass up. it has a less than high quality scope on it now. i have started to reload for it and would like some help. i will be usind it mainly for coyotes at ranges frome 300-600 yards would a millet hold up on it or is my best option a swfa ss 16x42. i would like a variable power but i want one that will hold up and i dont want to pay 1500 right now.

Re: 50 scope

I fully understand the desire to control costs, but you don't want to throw money away either. I'm not saying those scopes CAN'T take the recoil, I'm just saying that every 50BMG round throws some serious stresses through the scope and mount. Check out this video, but keep in mind single-shot recoil will be higher than semi-auto:

There is some serious flex with top-notch materials! I (luckily) bought my M96 and it came with a NF NXS 12-42x on it. If you don't want to jump on that bandwagon right off the gate, I'd suggest calling SWFA and Millett to find out if their scopes are "rated" for 50BMG.

Re: 50 scope

It makes me giggle, and feel tingly when I shoot it. I'm wanting to take it back home to the bayou and see how many hogs I can shoot through at once. Louisiana has not limits on hogs so when I head home it's gonna be on but for now it's coyotes.

Re: 50 scope

I was in the same boat when I bought my ar50. I went with a used Leupold Vari-x III 6.5-20. You can find them for around $400. Limited elevation travel but pretty decent glass and the best part is a great warranty. I may eventually upgrade to a Sightron SIII 8-32 mil/mil or moa/moa.

Re: 50 scope

As for the high recoil, I would like to do a video like that and compare it to my 300 mag because it has a hell of alot more recoil. The 50 is actually a dream to shoot. I think I heard that the ar50 has the lowest recoil and it wouldn't surprise me because all the flinch I had went away with the new trigger. It was the creep that was making me flinch

Re: 50 scope

I'd go with the vortex viper, they've been known to be quite durable and should stand up to your rifle, and have nice glass to boot. I'm not going to sit here and say that the millet isn't a decent option, it is, I just think that the vortex would better fit a rifle as powerful as that.

Re: 50 scope

if your cheap the bushnell 3200 10x40 will do on your 50 , i had one on mine before i bought something better. It held up well out to 500y.

but i would reccomend buying something better then that, how can you run some piece of shit 400 dollar scope on a 3000 dollar rifle that chucks 5 dollar bullets ? easily i guess.

Re: 50 scope

I'm thinking about waiting to get a night force or swfa hd, I was just checking. The scope that came with it is a redhead epic 6.5-20. I figured it would fall to pieces but it hasn't yet. I just read lots of good comments on the fixed swfa scopes and millet scopes on here and was curious. I need good glass but first I have to get a few more things for reloading. Thanks guys

Re: 50 scope

A friend of mine uses the Millet LRS on his 82a1. It's been on it for about 1000-1300 rds and has done very well. I realize thats the semi but if its lasted through that many rds without any problems I don't think you would have any problems either.

Re: 50 scope

reason im on a budget is "DIVORSE" i pay 3k every month. but i really think 99% of scope failure stories are just stories unless you take the brake off. my 50 recoil is less than my 308. i can shoot it offhand without an issue other than holding it up

Re: 50 scope

I almost picked the 16X SS for fifty caliber matches. But, I decided on the 20X since I knew I'd be shooting only the 1000 yard range. I think for general use the 10X or 16X SS will serve you well atop a 50 BMG. Both are rated for the rifle and the $300 price tag can't be beat.
