I'll try to explain why.
American men think they are born knowing how to excel at three things: driving, shooting, and you can figure out the third I'm, sure.
Now, most people on this forum are accomplished riflemen at distances that the average rifle owner is completely outclassed.
However, club members and their directors have no way of knowing which camp you fall in until they see you shoot and can vouch for you. As I am sure you can imagine, EVERYONE that wants to shoot from their 300, 500, 600, etc yard line tells them that they are God's gift to Earth with a rifle. But as we all know, most of that skill lives only in the imagination of the person making the claim. And as I am sure you can also imagine, bullets leaving the range due to misses or ricochets can have severe civil and even criminal consequences for a club.
Soooo, that's why not every Tom, Dick, or Harry is allowed to just walk on and shoot at distances that are longer than the common 100 or 200 yards. At a club I used to belong to in Cincinnati, not even members are allowed to use the 500 and 600 yard lines on their own unless they have a) an NRA highpower rifle classification of some sort or b) have been checked out by a member of the club's staff and give a card to prove it.
