500 Yd + Ranges In Michigan

Re: 500 Yd + Ranges In Michigan

Thanks Glock24!

Didn't know about that range and it's fairly close to my house just south of Benton Harbor! Around here it's easy to find farmland to shoot at. That is until summer when the corn/beans get in the way.....

Thanks,
Jason

Shadow,
Washtenaw Sportsmans Club as previously said has a 600 yd. range but it is not totaly open to the public. Hard to explian but they do open it on Wed. in the summer but you must be with a club member if you are not one. Blue Water Sportsmans Club in Kimball, near Port Huron, has 600 yds. not sure about their rules as far as non members go. Camp Grayling does go out to 1000 but is not open to the general public. Mich. Rifle & Pistol Assoc. does hold several long range matches there during the year. Your best may be Camp Atterbury in Indiana. They used to do Highpower matches there but dont know if they still do. Dont know of any public 600+ ranges in Michigan.

Re: 500 Yd + Ranges In Michigan

The Midland County Sportsman's Club has a 600yd range. But you have to be a member or a guest of a member. To be a member you have to pay their fee and obey their rules. The fee was not too bad. The rules..., I passed.

Re: 500 Yd + Ranges In Michigan

If your up north there are millions of acres of national forest and state land to shoot on. Just have to find a good spot. I have a couple of spots I am going to check the ranges on the spots when I go up the end of the month near Oscoda.

That is assuming I am not in the middle of a build by Pierce since my 5r looks like it might sell.

Be careful what state land you shoot on. You can't shoot on state land deemed hunting state land or something to that effect. That is, unless you are hunting. A friend of mine got a ticket for it. Otherwise, state land is good to go. Manistee Naitonal forest all the way.

Here is some info for camp Grayling. There is a list you need to be on to be able to enter camp Grayling for security reasons. However, getting on the list is simple. Email Dick Pardini at [email protected]. He will put you on the list. I know at they have open shoot but you have to pay. Otherwise you can show up to a match and shoot before and after. Hope this info helps.

Using random parcels of state land to do long range shooting is extremely irresponsible and to suggest it to others just makes it worse. The whole point of these lands is that they are open to the public, from all directions, at all times.

How is it irresponsible to shoot in a clear cut that is 2 miles long with no trails through it? Or the power lines that I use that have no trails through them and a extremely large hill at the other end? If shooting in the national forest or state land is irresponsible then wouldn't it be more so during hunting season?

That's one of the problems with some of these ranges. Most do not allow non-members to shoot unless escorted by a member. For instance, Negaunee Rod & Gun Club would be perfect for me as my wife's family lives there. But they don't allow non-member shooters and I can't justify the costs to join when we only visit a couple times a year.

Where would this range be located and what would be a good guess at fees?

Thanks

I'll try to explain why.

American men think they are born knowing how to excel at three things: driving, shooting, and you can figure out the third I'm, sure.

Now, most people on this forum are accomplished riflemen at distances that the average rifle owner is completely outclassed.

However, club members and their directors have no way of knowing which camp you fall in until they see you shoot and can vouch for you. As I am sure you can imagine, EVERYONE that wants to shoot from their 300, 500, 600, etc yard line tells them that they are God's gift to Earth with a rifle. But as we all know, most of that skill lives only in the imagination of the person making the claim. And as I am sure you can also imagine, bullets leaving the range due to misses or ricochets can have severe civil and even criminal consequences for a club.

Soooo, that's why not every Tom, Dick, or Harry is allowed to just walk on and shoot at distances that are longer than the common 100 or 200 yards. At a club I used to belong to in Cincinnati, not even members are allowed to use the 500 and 600 yard lines on their own unless they have a) an NRA highpower rifle classification of some sort or b) have been checked out by a member of the club's staff and give a card to prove it.

I was curious so I went to their website to check their rules.

I saw nothing objectionable except this:

<div class="ubbcode-block"><div class="ubbcode-header">Quote:</div><div class="ubbcode-body">8. Multiple loading for all rifles and
handguns is limited to ten (10) rounds.

9. Multiple loading for all shotguns is
limited to two (2) rounds</div></div>

Last I heard they were looking at the cadilac houghton lake area that's if this every becomes a reality. Sucks for us farther down in the state. Blue water sportsmans only uses their 3 and 600 ranges for matches only. If gas wasn't so expensive I'd personally look at Young's or South Kent.

Re: 500 Yd + Ranges In Michigan

The 600 yard range at the Washtenaw Sportsmans Club is open to the public on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00-8:00.

No membership required, no member escort required. Cost is $5

Re: 500 Yd + Ranges In Michigan

You sure about that turbo? I thought this year washtenaw was not going to let non members shoot on Wednesdays and it was supposed to be in the morning.

The Blue Water Sportsmans Assoc. does open the 600 yard range to the public. The last Wed, of the month only.
