I'm trying to work up a load for WIN 55gr FMJBT bullets.

The most accurate load so far is 25.7 gr H335 in prepped Rem brass.

Shooting through a scoped DPMS 1/9 barrel, the best group is 2" which is way better than what I get with M193 or PMC.

Is this the best I can expect from this bullet? Should I try something without a cannalure?

Re: 55gr FMJBT Accurate?

The Hornady ones I use with IMR 4198 groups just over 1 1/4" at 100 yards in my old mil spec AR. That's 27 of 30 rounds in the same ragged hole. You can see the first 3 rounds "walking" into the group. (The rifle was clean when I started.)

Re: 55gr FMJBT Accurate?

Get some Hornadys. They stay under an inch in all 3 of my .223 rifles and have shot plenty of groups in the 3/4" range with them. I also use H335 for powder. I bought the Winchesters once and if you lay 10 of them out on the table you can find some are different than others. The lengths and cannelure location vary enough that you can eyeball it.

I agree with the favorable reports on Hornady's 55-gr FMJBTs, though I never put them through a rifle as accurate as theirs. Just bad luck with .223s so far.

IME, take your best-shooting match loads, and the Hornadys will shoot .5 to 1.0 MOA "looser".

HOWEVER, my last batch of 500 had three of them with the cannelure about 1/8-inch forward of where they should have been. The Lee factory crimp die had to strain a bit, and the loaded rounds look a bit funny--as in they make me want to laugh funny. Been saving them to send back to Hornady for their amusement, but other things keep coming up.

Re: 55gr FMJBT Accurate?

I buy a couple cases (6,000) of the Hornady 55s each year. I dont think I have shot another bullet in any of my ARs in years. They will hold MOA or better all day long.

FWIW: Hornady's are just under 1 MOA in several rifles we shoot. </div></div>

Quoted for the MF'ing truth. My experiences mirror his. My hornady 10 shot groups with WC844 surplus were 1".

Re: 55gr FMJBT Accurate?

im the oppisite ive had great luck with WIN 55gr fmjbt, in a savage mod 16 bolt gun we were hitting coke cans at 385 yards and had 2 shooters both get first round hits on 1.25 liter coke bottels, loaded in ADI brass (australian military brass)26.5 gr of ADI AR2206H powder and standard CCI primers. and seated just of the lands (this is a hot load, so work up to it as usual)

dont know what the 100 yard groups are, as i havent shot 100 yards with it for ages.

and as said about the other option is the hornady 55's.
