Okay, I finally did it!!! I pulled the trigger and went with the 5R Mil-Spec .308. My options were 700LTR, 700P, and 5R. He put the order in yesterday and I should have it by Friday. My smith told me not to worry about the factory trigger, he will make it very nice (I trust him). I'm wondering what is a good bottom metal for the price. I was told to look at Surgeon, but I also see people with Badger, Wyatt, etc... Also will be in the market for 20moa base and a set of rings. Any suggestions will be greately appreciated.

Things I want done in order of importance:

(1) Cut the barrel down to 20-22"s recrown and thread, otherwise I like option #2, let me know what ya'll think.
(2) Get a good break (one that will accept supressor)open for suggestions on the break.
(3) I will paint the stock myself (already went and got the paint)
(4) Have barrel, action, bm, base and rings done in duracoate or cerakote (open for suggestions), not sure on what to do with the scope yet (krylon or other coating)
(5) Get a better scope, looking at Vortex PST FFP, or FFP millet (also open for suggestions, just trying to stay below $900)
(6) Have action trued, but that will be later, like next year later.

As always thanks for the info. I will try to post pics of the rifle after I get it. However, I'm not a TI guy so we'll see.

Re: 5R on its way

From personal trial & error (mostly error) I would say put off 1-4 & 6 and put all your marbles on #5 and ammo. In a year or so you won't have to ask what to do to your rifle, you'll know. Best of luck!

Re: 5R on its way

Re: 5R on its way

I just received a 20" 5r yesterday, my first bolt gun. i went with nightforce 1 piece 20moa rail, and it fit perfectly with no gaps at all, its steel and has recoil lug. Larue low rings with vfz mounts and Bushnell tactical elite 6-24x50, its ffp and illuminated, i mainly went with it because i have a thing for Japanese stuff

I agree.

Re: 5R on its way

I have a friend with a 5R. Cut to 20", threaded with AAC suppressor. The action is smooth , compared to my 700 AAC SD. Makes mine feel clunky and worn. Nice gun for sure.

Re: 5R on its way

Thanks for the input. The reason I want to paint it is because I want to be different. Plus it would be nice to have the bragging rights when I get it out at the range. So if I put off 1-4 and 6, then what are your suggenstions on a scope given my price range? Some of the stuff I would like to get it done, just for the mental side of it. Kinda' like, if you think its better. Then mentally you will perform better. Keep it coming, I appreciate it.

Re: 5R on its way

I have a 5R.

I would not worry about cutting it down yet. 24" is a very nice barrel length for the .308. If you are intent on cutting it down, wait till you have the money and have the action trued at the same time, set the barrel back a bit and have it cut to whatever length.

The factory trigger is not terrible. I was able to adjust mine to 3.5lbs with no problem. I did replace it though. I prefer the wider, ribbed trigger as found on the original 700.

You have ordered a very good rifle, buy the best glass you can afford and mount it with a decent base and rings.

Shoot is as is until you are certain what upgrades you want.

Re: 5R on its way

I have a 5R...adjusted the trigger, added a bipod and good scope (NF with NP-R1 bought used here on the Hide)...now spending money on good ammo and learning at the range and not even close to needing a better rifle in the near future...

Enjoy -

Re: 5R on its way

Okay, so should I just sale my Remmy VTR and dump that money into a scope? I was really wanting to keep the VTR to have a donor action in the future. So, throw me some bones on good scopes in my price range. NF is out of the question, so don't suggest it. Thanks again

Re: 5R on its way

The SS HD is damn sharp for a $700 scope. I have the $300 10XSS on my 5R and it has worked in comps and classes where I'm laying next to the NFs, USOs, and S&Bs. I can hit things out to 1000yds with my combo. Definitely a difference in clarity but it was never enough to blame a miss on. In the beginning, I just needed a simple optic that would hold a zero. Badger rings and base are a little more expensive but solid as a rock. I spent the extra money I saved on classes and ammo...and then I started tinkering: AICS, Timney, bolt lift, Atlas bipod, mono pod, tab sling, fully adjustable butt-pad, BO brake. I made each change one at a time over the last two years of going to the range, local shoot, or classes and thinking how I could get better. Have fun!

Re: 5R on its way

I have to agree with what others have said. Put off the custom touches for now. The 5R is simply a great shooter straight out of the box. I bought one 5 or 6 years ago. Get the trigger where you like it and invest your money in a good scope. All of the other things are great but I would put those off until I had a good piece of glass.

Re: 5R on its way

FWIW, Millet does not make a FFP scope.
I believe you meant Weaver.

If you can swing 750 or so for glass< I'd recommend the Weaver 3-15 FFP Tactical.

If your budget is lower than that, I have had very good luck with my Falcon 4-14 FFP.

Otherwise, there are many good options for SFP scopes in the 400-600 range.

Re: 5R on its way

I got the bushnell tactical elite above for $820, its FFP 6-24 made by LOW, same company that makes the weavers and vortex razor hd

Re: 5R on its way

I agree with the others about putting as much money into the glass as you can. I put a SS 5-20 on mine and couldn't be happier. The non-illuminated is a little over your budget but if you can somehow swing it, you'll have a scope that you may never need to upgrade.

Re: 5R on its way

I would look into a stock pack, or even some sleeping pad and tape. Those stocks need the cheek rest built up for a solid sight picture. That will help with accuracy.

Make the rifle fit you, and that includes whick rect you decide on scope wise.
Good luck.

Regards,
DT

Re: 5R on its way

I'm still waiting on it. I'm going to call my ffl after he gets to the range and see if he got it in. Hopefully my grammar doesn't suck, I'm on the final stretch of my 10hr shift. Any LE guys out there, my days off start in 1hr 27mins. Our department does 8days on 10hr shifts, and 6 days off. Its like a vacation every 8 days. I will keep y'all posted.

Re: 5R on its way

put the money into the scope and rings get a good foundation and then build off of that. all the extras down the line make it funner to build then doing all at once. gives you something to look forward to.
