imo the standard screws are strong enough for a s/a rifle
but some people want to go all out with a base that has 8/40 screws a recoil lug and 2 set pins i think this is overkill maybe for a lighter 300 wm or the 338 lapua

Don't wast the money it's just a .308. If you ask any good smith
GA,APA etc... They will tell you the same. The only real reason you would want to go with 8-40's is if you striped one of the 6-48's out witch is unlikely. Put the money into good rings and bases (Badger).

Another reason to go 8-40 screws, and the reason I have done it on Rem receivers, is that the Rem receiver holes are drilled crooked and you need alot of windage to zero the scope. This will cut down on your overall elevation travel and that's not good. Keep an eye on how much windage you need to zero the rifle.

I've seen NIB Remingtons with cross-threaded and crooked scope mount holes. I guess they were drilled on Monday or Friday. It's always a good idea to at least chase the threads before mounting a scope, at least IMHO.
