Hey guys I’m brand new into reloading and I can’t quite find an answer so figured I’d ask the pros. I’m using a LE Wilson headspace gauge and a caliper with a depth gauge and my once fired brass is at .004” (on these gauges min is .005” deep and max would be .000) My question is what do I do about this when I go to size it? I’ll be running a Redding type s FL bushing die. I also measured an unfired factory hornady round and got .005” deep (right at minimum). Any help or insight would be appreciated!

Set your die so that the shoulder positionof sized brass coming out of the die is .002 less than it was before going into it.

Whats the actual gauge youre using? this one? Im guessing not since you have max and min numbers?

That’s the one I’m using. And so I’m measuring the .001” over minimum (according to the above case gauge) on fired brass so I’d size to be .001” under minimum?

Sounds like your case only grew .001 compared to once fired.

    Mine grow up to .004

In your case I would probably take it back to unfired size which is usually min saami spec to begin with.

There is a cool video floating around about finding your actual headspace by removing the ejector and firing pin and trying different sized cases. Imho that's the only rue way to find your chamber size then back off a thou or two.

I dont care what their arbitrary max and minimum say the "case gage" says it is as the gauge has no idea what the actual size of your chamber is. Take your fired case and size it so that it measures .002 less after being run into the sizing die.

Thats all there is to it.
(Provided that its not getting caught on some other surface of the gauge. Which is why I recomend you return that piece of junk and get a decent comparator)

L E Wilson is good shit. I use both that and the Hornady comparator.

They do make a Mic that goes on top of that guage. Although after a while I can tell just by feel if something is right or not.

I appreciate your guys’ input and advice! I’ll pick up a comparator this evening to go along with the LE Wilson gauge since I have a while to wait for my brass to dry out. Thank you!

I have the same gage from Wilson. Definitely a good quality piece of equipment.

But I wouldn't use it to measure headspace to set up a die. I'd use the Hornady comparator. As others have said, measure your fired case and adjust the die so that it is bumping the shoulder back .002.
