New build project. Anybody got a feel on the shortest barrel length one could get by with, 1-8.5 twist and shooting primarily 140's. Will be shooting suppressed. Also has anybody played with a subsonic load for the creedmoor? Thanks in advance.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor barrel???

Some of the guys around here have ran as short as 18" in 260, which is comparable to the creedmoor. You are just going to scarifice speed and distance that you can reach out to.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor barrel???

I don`t think that I would go less than 20" and you will be sacrificing the capabilities at that length. My advice would be go with at least a 24" and have fun.The way the suppressor sounds on Vegas50 6.5CM I wouldn`t even worry about going subsonic. You can go to the 6.5creedmoor forum and watch his video of his can and that anno he is shooting he said is clocking 2850fps.It sounds quieter than a 22LR.You can probably contact him on here and he will help you I`m sure.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor barrel???

At some point I'm going to do a 20 inch 6.5 barrel for my M2008, after running the numbers it's going to still hit a bit harder than a 175 gr 308 at 1,000 yards and drop about a 1.3-1.5 mil's less. Not to mention less wind drift. That seems worth it to me...

You are right, Vegas50's (or D.Miller on here) is nice and quiet with the can, although, I have the Elite Iron can on my 6.5 as well, and we are going to test some sub-sonic loads this weekend. I started out at 13 grains of Trailboss and worked my way down in 1 grain increments to 9 grains. I loaded 5 rounds each to launch through the chrono. (got some load starting data from a fellow shooter who has already done some development with .308 subs) I will let you all know what my results are. I am shooting them out of my match gun, 28" rock barrel, MTU contour. Elite Iron Delta suppressor, 155 grain Lapua SP bullets

shooting at a target 500y out, not the pistol target 15y in front of me.

Those were standard loads averaging around 2850-2875. The Elite iron can does a great job on quieting down the initial boom but obviously there is still the super sonic crack.

However the can does a great job at sound suppression it has a habit of opening up groups on smaller caliber bullets. I have a short, light weight, fast twist 308 build in the works to utilize this can to its fullest.

I currently run a 26" MTU 1/8 twist on my creedmoor but will be setting that barrel back and trying an 16.5-18" creedmoor experiment with JFComfort. Once one of our MTUs gives up the ghost we will chop it down and see how the 6.5creed round works or doesn't work out of a shot tube.

Im cant wait to try out Hog's sub creedmoor loads this weekend.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor barrel???

Got the sub load worked out, it turned out to be 12 grains of Trailboss with the 155 grain Lapua SP bullets, they were around 1020-1050 fps. I started with 13 grains and they were still sub-sonic, but right on the edge, worked my way down 1 grain at a time to 9 grains FYI (9 grains = 650 fps

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor barrel???

If you are thinking of going shorter.. I'd reccommend going with a lighter weight bullet to make up for it. I think the Sierra 123's or the 120 AMAX's would do awesome out of a 18"-20".

I want to do a short barreled 6.5 Creedmoor soon. I was thinking of using the 123's and 120's with Varget.
