Im looking for some information on building a 6.5 creedmoor. Im wanting to build this rifle for a more economic practice gun. My current 1000 yd rifle is a 30-378 weatherby which gets a little spendy to shoot. Im wondering what barrel length, twist, and any other useful info any of you might have. Thanks in advance

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor for longrange build

6.5 Creedmoor is an excellent round. Been shooting it for over 3 years now in competitions using factory 140 AMAX loads. Great set up. 24-28" barrels will give you good velocities. You can use any .473 bolt face action and other parts that you would use for a .308. If you plan to reload H4350 is a great powder to use.

Lots of info on the Hide about the Creedmoor. If you look to the right in the Custom Search Engine box and do some searches for the Creedmoor and you will find alot of info.

For the 6.5, 1:8 twist works for the longer target pills. Barrel length is subjective just as it is with profile. I think my .260 is a 24" Bartlein 5R in #6 profile. If I did it over today it would be 21" with a light varmint contour.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor for longrange build

Well Im planning on using a 28" hart barrel. I want to shoot 144gr bullets so Im thinking 1in8 twist. Its going to use a Rem 700 action. Is there anything Im missing and does that combo sound good or should I consider something else.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor for longrange build

8 twist is a good twist rate. I run a 28" on my 6.5 Creedmoor. It comes down to whether you plan to shoot factory more or reload more. If shooting factory go with the longer barrel to get the most velocity. If reloading you can go with a shorter barrel and push up the powder charge some to make up some for a shorter barrel. I wouldn't go shorter than 24" though.

Also if the weight of the longer barrel seems to be a problem then you can just use a lighter contour. Something in the med palma works well.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor for longrange build

I went with a 24" barrel with a 1 in 8 twist because I reload and plan to use a suppressor at times, so 28" would be too long. Either way 1 in 8" twist is preferred to stabilize the 140gr bullets.

The contour will depend on how much and how fast you plan to shoot through it.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor for longrange build

My rifle is sporting a 22" barrel and it shoots lights out with the 140 Amax ammo from Hornady. With hand loads the groups tighten up a little more.

I'm definitely down on velocity with the 22" barrel, right about 2700fps but I'm also only running a (QL estimated) 50ksi load. I've had them up as hot as 2775fps but the load was getting pretty warm and I didn't feel like smoking brass for the sake of a touch more drop.

Doing it all over again I'd simply drop the contour to something lighter. I had the barrel on the shelf already when I started the build so I used it. A truck axle is not necessary, I'd go to something just heavy enough that the muzzle could run 5/8-24 for my suppressor.

The rifle's been routinely impressive for everyone that's shot it or seen it run. Rob, Fargo, Event Horizon have all seen it go and it is a hammer.

The 6.5 CM is a great round to shoot.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor for longrange build

I'm running a Rock Creek 5R 1-8" twist @ 27"
With H4350 and a 139 Lapua Scenar I'm getting 2,850 fps. Great round, I have been enjoying shooting it in matches and LR shooting out in the desert.

You don't want to go too heavy with a Creedmoor bullet, I find that 142 is enough. The Creedmoor just isn't designed to shoot much more bullet. I think you will find bullets in the 130-142 range are ideal for this caliber.

My guess would be a 30+ inch barrel to burn all the powder, which is more barrel than you really want here. Check out this article.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor for longrange build

Creedmoor was designed for longrange in mind, Rob who posted above I believe shoots for Hornady and shoots Creedmoor Exclusively if thats any indication.

I can attest to that. Hitting a small hanging square plate at 600yds (I forget the size, I'd say no more than 1 MOA but Bohem will know the exact size) was boringly easy - and that was me shooting wrong-sided. This was suppressed too I should add.

I would however take what Bohem said with the caveat that the guy can shoot. Just for shits he sat down, unslung, hoisted his rifle and took a shot in about 10 seconds and got a first round hit on said target. Wisely he decided to call it a day at that....

On a serious note - when I have the funds together after paying for my TacOps and the suppressor that'll go on it, I'll be collecting the same parts that Bohem has for his 6.5Cr and getting him to build me the same rifle.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor for longrange build

I am getting 2770fps out of a 1-8 twist Rock Creek barrel finished at 24 inches with factory ammo. I have a Remington Varmint contour but would recommend a Med Palma for light weight.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor for longrange build

I was running a 30" Bartlein 5R with 1/8 twist on my Savage. I was getting right at 2850 fps with my handloads using both the 140 Bergers and 140 AMAX's. Both were easily 1/2 MOA with the Bergers typically between .25-.40 depending on me doing my part. I'd go with a 28-30" barrel if you can. Rob01 does indeed shoot for Hornady so take his words wisely as he really knows this caliber well. He originally inspired me to go with the CM and I don't regret it a bit.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor for longrange build

I'm going to be putting together a Creedmoor soon, and from what I gather from this thread and others, I'll be happy with a 22" Medium Palma. Lots of good info here.

I have a 22" med. palma in my MCS-TA. It's extremely quick and handy, not an over-built match rifle any more.
Did I lose velocity? Yes, but it will hammer anything inside of 1000yds and is spooky accurate.

You're right; it was a 6" plate at 597yd. Almost exactly 1 MOA.

Not a bad bit of shooting on your part either.

ETA:

This weekend Ply1951Guy and I were out shooting plates and rocks in an old strip pit.

I had a 2nd round hit at 1265yd on a soda can with the 140 Amax. He and I took turns hammering 1 MOA or less targets all the way to 1400yd with the 6.5 CM and the 7/300 WSM that I have.
