6.5 Creedmoor

I know it's probably hidden somewhere in this thread but does anyone have any load data for 123 smks in a semi gas gun? I just got the email from JP saying my barrel is on its way and I want to load some rounds before I complete my build.

Hi guys,

My old load with the 140 Hybrids stopped grouping well for me. Load 42.9 H4350/ 2.86"

1. Should I seat them longer until accuracy comes back?
2. Increase the charge?
3. Or both?

My 139's Scenars still shoot super accurate with the same barrel so it's not toast yet. The barrel only has about 1700 rds.

Where did you get your info to start loading with the Lapua 139 Scenar? I can't find a reloading manual online or their website. I have some of these bullets on the way and really want to get some loads started. Thanks!

I started with 140 gr bullet suggestions in the book and worked up a load. He's got more in his then I do.

I'm having a heck of a time with my Berger 140 Hybrids. Would it be safe to say I could duplicate my powder charge used for load development for my Bergers and be ok?

Started with a rem 700 sps varmint in 22-250, with hs precision stock, detachable mag. Very nice shooter but the barrel was worn.(I haad over 3k rds thru it) so a couple months ago I gave it to wild west gun for them to replace the barrel but in 6.5 creedmor cut to 26 inches, add a muzzle break , add a timney trigger and true the action. Im on my way to try it, its super windy but I just can't wait. I have only 36 rds but thats ok...lol.

My load is 42.7 gr h-4350 fed 210m 140 berger vld seated .010 off the lands- 28in bartlein 1:8 mcmillan mbr.n/f 12x42 i would spend the money now and handload to really show the potential of the great round- factory load shoot ok but if you really want to unlock accuracy...handload.

I bought some 140 Hybrids to try, the first load I I tried looks pretty good off the Bench at 100 yards.
42.4 grains of RL 17. I think They are seated about .015 or .020 off the lands.

Hopefully they will work good off the 600 yard line.

I still cant find h4350, so having some varget I decided to reload some, at 100 yards it is not bad. Here a 4 shots and 5 shoots.

Thanks
Joe

Go to range report and exterior ballistics. I started a thread about the whole ordeal. It's the 140 Amax. The old Vs. the new

Went out again, still using varget (tgats what I have on hand) to ME it looks good at least to 600 yards (this is probably the best group I ever made at 600 but im kearning...lol)

Lets see...

44.1gr H4350

123gr Lapua Scenar

CCI BR2

2.800" COAL

2925fps 22" Krieger

Single Digit SD, 8 I believe

Going to experiment with Varget, H4350 puts a lot of pressure back through the port, this is an auto loader. I've got a few components I'm going to swap to try and delay the timing on the cycle but if that doesn't work I may switch powders in an effort to get the gun running less harshly. Its putting a beating on the brass right now and I believe most of the problem has to do with the timing, rather than excessive pressure. Its a shame, because its a really accurate load.

H4350 load - has been stable across 3 out of 4 lots

43.0gr H4350
140gr Berger VLD (Hunting version seems more accurate but Target is still 1/2 MOA)
GM210M Primer
.020" Jump
2820FPS 26" Bartlein barrel

H100V load - Faster but fouls barrel very quickly, leaves heavy soot on case necks. Only tried 1 lot

42.5gr H100V
140gr Berger VLD
G210M Primer

I pretty much use the size charge at 42.8grs of RL17 for 140-142gr bullets in DTA with excellent results. Stopped using H4350 since I got so much more velocity and maintained good accuracy.

6.5 creedmoor

139 scenars

42 g h4350

2 1/2 inch 5 shot group at 600 yards

though very accurate I do notice a 6 inch drop of bullet impact at 600 yds compared to factory hornady 139 loads.

I took three of the factory 139 loads apart and weighed the powder and it weighed in at 44.1 grains of h4350. That is a lot more than they say it is loaded at. So I have some more reloads done at 44 grains to see of I get similar bullet impacts at distance. I'll let you know what I find out.

With a DA of 2000, 6.3 Mils to 800yds and 9.2 Mils to 1000yards. My velocity requirement in load testing was only to keep at least 1000 yards on the first rotation of a 10 Mil per turn scope. I wanted something that was stupid accurate, and I got it really by accident.

Sean-
Just curious why loaded so short at 2.75 COAL? Short throated chamber or just looking to jump the bullet a significant amount? I just picked up about 900 of the Scenar L's and have had little opportunity to test much. Shooting in two AR's and one bolt gun, all of which have different lengths to touching lands.

Redding or Whidden FL sizing bushing dies with micrometer seating die. Either are very good, low runout if set up correctly. Use either with confidence. Have both AR's and bolt 6.5's, hence the FL sizing or you might get away with body die and neck size bushing setup if dedicated to one bolt rifle.

Same question as I'd posed to Sean-what's behind the short COAL? Throat length, mag length, bullet jump for this bullet in your gun, ?? I'm working with 136 Scenar in two AR's and one bolt, all with different length to touching lands and seeing your's at 2.77 and other at 2.75-both quite short-curious at to reasoning. Am loading to 2.100 to ogive, right at 2.82 overall.

I'm not sure. I knew it was going to be safe in my rifle (I've gone up to 43.5gr w/ a 140 AMAX loaded at that length) so I figured I would try it out. I usually just load my rounds mag length, but to be honest I found almost no variation between mag length and standard SAAMI 2.810" w/ the 140 AMAX. I only had one box of these 136 scenars that I got as part of a trade, so I didn't want to go dicking around w/ load development. If I get more of these in the future I'll probably play around a bit more because I know I can load them hotter and longer and get more speed; but, for know I know I have a good starting point.

Gents,

To answer your question, no other reason that they shoot really good! I was experimenting pushing them out, playing with mag length and then dropping them just to see what would happen. When I found that the shortest OAL I tried punched them into one hole, I decided to just stick to it and not worry.

Sorry I don't have a better answer than the load just shoots and it was a random experiment.

Do you think you could comment regarding what temperature you were shooting in? I like the numbers for Reloader 17 but have also heard horror stories regarding how it shoots REALLY fast on hot days.

My setup will be very similar to your setup. Also, what kind of brass?

After "shoot and clean" and got the copper fouling down to almost nothing. I pulled out some old hand loads from my last barrel. 140 hybrid at 2.125 to ogive with 42.4 h4350. I put 4 in the same hole, but as usual, I pulled the 5th shot high.

Sorry, been awhile since I've checked in. Temp has been from 45-65 degrees and seems pretty stable so far. I am going to try testing for stability this weekend, here's my plan. Put 5 rounds in an insulated case with an ice pack, 5 rounds in an insulated case with a chem hand warmer and leave 5 rounds at ambient temp. I will measure the temp of each batch before shooting, being careful not to let them sit in the chamber long. I'll record the MV on my Magneto v3 and use the info to measure MV change per temp change. I'll post my results when I get them.

Update: I tested the MV change of RL17 today. I put 5 rounds in a cooler with ice, 5 in a cooler with hand warmers and 5 left at ambient. They were all left in their container for about 2 hours. I checked the temp of each set before shooting and got 35, 55, 70. I loaded each set quickly to minimize heating or cooling and shot them quickly so they didn't sit in a warm chamber. Using a Magneto V3 I got the average for each set. I calculated MV change by subtracting the lowest MV from the the middle and dividing the difference by the diff. in temp for those two sets. I then did this for the mid and high sets. The MV change for the low to mid was 1.3 and the change for the mid to high was .8. I then used just the low temp set and high and did the same calc which gave me very close to 1. with the 3 to compare I feel very confident that RL17 is giving me a MV Change of 1 fps per degree F. I hope someone else runs a similar test and can compare results with mine but it looks like RL 17 is pretty stable.

Update on my 6.5 Crusader. The Krieger isn't as fast as the Bartlein was but man is it accurate.
140 vld with 42.4 h4350.
78 F with a 100 yard zero.
372 yards- 1.5 mils
620 yards - 3.78 mils
790 yarss - 5.8 mils
890 yards- 6.8 mils
985 yards - 8.0 mils.
Running about 2790 to 2800 fps.
Had a 10" gong at 890 and put 5 that were 2 to 2 1/2" group tops. At 985, I actually shot a tighter group than at 885. I put three shots that were touching on plate.

So far I'm VERY happy with my results. Especially considering that these loads were all loaded about 10 months ago with my OLD barrel.

Playing around with RL 17 right now. Will update this post with range report as soon as i shoot my test loads.

Speeds listed are for 1 shot only across magneto-speed just to get a rough idea of what kind of speed I'm looking at.

Plan is to shoot for accuracy this week and then chrono more loads to verify speed. Speed isn't worth much if i can't find an accurate load.

42.2 and 42.4 showed lots of promise, .25" groups with a couple of fliers (i can honestly take the blame for the fliers). Loaded up some 42.3gr to try next with 130gr berger vld's. Ran all the way to 43.0gr with 130's and no pressure signs.....

43.0gr gets me 2929 with a 130 berger from a 22" barrel......

123gr scenars

43.0gr 2906

43.5gr 2935

44.0gr 3006 (barely starting to see pressure signs with this one)

All from a 22" barrel.

Update:

checked the loads @ 100 but nothing was consistent enough for me to investigate further.....back to the drawing board. Do have some Berger 140's to try out with RL17 yet though.

I too played with R17 and 140 hybrids and 130 vlds. I shot 42.5 r17 with a 140 hybrid. Dope was 3.49 mils at 620, 5.15 at 790 , 6.2 at 890, 6.6 at 923, and 7.5 at 995 yards. Were running 2898 fps from a 26" Krieger 1:8 on a GAP Crusader.
My dope for the 130 vlds .... Same distances listed were
620- 3.17 mils
790- 4.7 mils
890-5.77 mils
923-6.15 mils
995-7 mils.
130's were running 3050 fps. 43.2 R17. At 2.140 to ogive. No overpressure what so ever , but they weren't NEARLY as accurate as the 140 hybrids.
Maybe they just aren't as accurate at that speed because my 43.8 h4350 load at 2940 KILLS!!

136L Lapua Scenar

40 grains (weighed) H4350, FED GM210M primer

2758 FPS average for 10 shots over the Magneto Speed (My 26" light Varmint 1:8 twist Krieger barrels seem to run a tad faster than others are finding)

COAL is 2.845 (these are for a match where single loading is REQUIRED, but they will go through the magazine) but that length gives me .005 off the lands.

5 shot group @ 100 yards (kind of a breezy day) gave me .485" group.

Seems to be in the right speed area for me, but I am planning on doing up some loads between 40 grains and 42 grains and see what happens.

I use a load of H4350 with 43.5 grains and FED GM210M primer in my more "tactical" 6.5 Creedmoor, 123 grain Lapua at 2980 FPS over the Magneto Speed Chrono with all dies (I use a different set of dies for each) set differently (giving 2.797 COAL @ .006 off the lands). The "tactical" rifle is an M24 Kieger barrel in 8:1 twist finished at 26 inches and shoots well under one MOA...usually near down around .5 MOA even with an ole half blind and shaky guy like me shooting the groups.

Niles, What length barrel? Bolt or gas gun?

Any one play with IMR 4451 yet? I've got a pound to try just haven't had a chance to make any loads with it yet.

IMR 4451
I loaded 41.5, 42.0, 42.5 with 130 vlds with ogive @ 2.151

42.5, 43.0, 43.5 with 123 scenars @ coal: 2.80

Going to try and shoot them tomorrow.

Update:

90* F 1000 Elevation 40% humidity 29.43 baro

22" barrel - badger micro FTE 3x fired brass not annealed

IMR 4451 - 3 shots each with magnetospeed V3 bayo and V1 display

130 Berger VLD - Ogive 2.151

41.5gr - 2708 SD 10

42.0gr - 2725 SD 11

42.5gr - 2798 SD 22

Didn't reach pressure signs with these yet.

123 Lapua Scenar - 2.800 COAL

42.5gr - 2847 SD 13

43.0gr - 2872 SD 10

43.5gr - 2909 SD 22

Ejector swipe on 43.5gr. Max pressure.

A couple loads showed some promise with the 130's. Would have to play with seating depth on 123's they're very picky in my rifle.

This powder has a different smell than any of the hodgdon powders, can't describe it, but it is familiar. Powder also meters very well.

Thought it was interesting how the SD's shot up with the higher charge weights. Not sure what's causing that.

I have an AIAT with a Mile Hih Shooting 26" 6.5 Creedmoor Tooley/Bartlin barrel.

Next week I plan to begin working on a load. The chamber measures to 1.955. I haven't measured to the lands yet.

My one shot brass all measures 1.928 to 1.932.

I plan to trim my brass to 1.928.

I have one pound of H4350 and RL15. Plan to test with 140 AMAX pills.

Can anyone advise on where I should start for my ladder test? Which powder? OAL suggestions? How much jump?

I started H4350 at 41 grains, you may find your first node around 41-41.5 and your second 42.4-42.9 with 139-142 class bullets.

To the question above yours, my 26" X-Caliber barrel is affixed to a Stiller bolt action and my chamber has the .199 freebore.

Seating depth testing at 300y, dots are 2"
seating%20test%20130%20006.jpg

I will be going with -.020 me thinks
wink.gif

I used the same elevation setting on all... interesting that the POI climbed the further I jumped.

This was also with freshly annealed brass, my magnetospeed clocked 2898 today with the bullets .020 off the lands. Air temp at time of shots was around 74

Did you mean RL 17? I haven't heard of anyone using 15. I am using Rl 17 and getting 2900 fps at 42.1 gr.

I recently got a rifle in 6.5 creedmoor. I bought 4 boxes of Hornday factory ammo so I could shoot the rifle. I now have brass, powder and bullets to start loading with. I am going to start with 41.5 grn H4350 and I am going to use both 140 grn Hornday AMAX and 140 grn Berger Hybrids bullets. Just something to start with. I have looked over all your post and have found some good data. Thanks.

Tried out some of the 130 hybrids this weekend.

42.8 and 43.0 of H4350 @ 2.200 to Ogive is the node for me.

Was getting some pressure signs @ 43.0

42.8gr @ 2.200 CBTO gives me 2804 average with SD 8 from my 22" barrel.

Shot this load in a match this past weekend. Seemed to shoot pretty good at distance verified drop to 1k.

Some data. No pressure signs (as you can see I do not really push it). Pretty consistent 75 degree shooting days in the Bay Area. Blue figures are best groups (4 rounds). 140gr bests were one hole.

Berger 140gr Hybrid loaded .2 off Jam.

H414 - 42gr

Hornady Brass

Federal GM210M primer

Barrel 26" Hawk Hill marksman contour

Average velocity: 2760fps

Newer to reloading and decided to try some H414 when I found a deal on it and couldn't find any H4350. Probably should have done some more research other than finding out its just a ball powder version of the 4350. Some notes on the load I've noticed: its somewhat dirty, not awful or unbearable, but a bit more soot on the case necks and in the barrel. Accuracy was good, .5 from a 10 shot group at 100y off a bipod and concrete bench. SD was 20, obviously not the greatest but Im going to chalk some of that up to being newer to reloading and having some looser neck tensions from bullets I had to tap out a bit and seat to the right length, a little better loading on my part im sure would drop that down a lot.

Edit: SD 10

Ok so I went back and measured my throat. It's eroded just a little. Not hardly at all.
So I decided to take some 1x brass, use a redding type S FL die with a .289 bushing and bumped the shoulder back 2 1/2/1000"s.
The load : 42.5 H4350 , 140 hunting vld at 2.210 to ogive. 1x brass fl sized.
The results....

I do believe this is the best group I've shot to date with this new bbl. .13 moa!

I appreciate it. It's been a process. I figured that since GAP used the same reamer, I would have no problem getting (with the exact same loads) the results of my last bbl, a Bartlein , at 27" 1:8.5 that had a slightly smaller contour.
This new bbl is 26" Krieger MTU 1:8 and is definitely heavier than my previous bbl. Plus GAP had to put in a barrel pad because of the dimensions of the MTU.
I started playing with OAL and realized this particular setup likes the bullets MUCH closer to the lands. I was jumping them 90-1000"s with my old bbl. Now I'm only .20 off.
Hell, I had just began to come to grips that this was just NOT going to shoot as good as the last bbl.
I guess it just goes to show you never know until you keep playing with it.

I've had a NF NXS 5.5x22x56 mildot. A Bushnell XRS and ERS. I decided to go with the ERS not just because of the FFP, but also that it's 3.5x21 is all I really need out to 1400 yards or so.

In an attempt to figure out what rifle I am using this year for Montana mule, I decided to shoot some 140 A-Max for the first time in this barrel using the same load that works well with 139 scenars, 42.7 grains of H4350. And I figured that with a longer bearing surface it might be good to drop it back a couple tenths (42.5) just in case the increased length raised the pressure and put me out of the 139 node. I seated the bullets -.029" back from a hard seat in the lands.

At the range, I hooked up the magnetospeed (my new way of running a OCW test) and fired the four rounds of 42.5... 2796fps SD=1 ES=3, I kind of kick my self when I show that as those were the only 4 I had bought.

Moving on to 42.7 I had 2810fps SD=3 ES=8...

So with my remaining rounds of 42.7 I detached the magnetospeed and put a couple rounds down range at 3, 4 and 6 hundred to see if Ballistic AE was tracking with the new data and was rewarded with near center hits. Looked at my predicted drop for 1k and dialed that in to the scope and started shooting while holding about half a mil.
Deer%20rainbow%20024.jpg

While watching the impacts I could tell today was going to be a good day and then promptly threw the next shot a touch high. LOL so I sent an extra one just for good measure.

After shooting another rifle I came back to shoot the smaller steel target on the right with the creedmoor and finished off the remaining 4 rounds.

Minus the high impact the left target has 2.5" of vertical and the 4 on the right target has 2.25" of vertical.

Not a bad day.

I had to look at it twice while I was recording itl. Just remember this was only for four rounds each... As good as 42.7 shot at 1k I am tempted to leave it alone and just keep loading that, but numbers on 43.5 have me second guessing. Might load up 10 of each and see what I see.

My process is simple. On this batch of brass I had just annealed them. Resized leaving about .0035 neck tension, threw them in my vibrating tumbler for a couple hours, clean the primer pockets out afterward and primed, charged and seated the night before.

One change over how I have loaded 139 scenars in the past (which has good numbers also just not quite single digit ES) is I seated the bullets -.029 deep rather than .020-.025

I just loaded up two OCW runs with the 140 AMAX and the 130 Berger Hybrid. I will see what the numbers look like and then try your method of seating the AMAX a bit longer.

Thanks and great loading/shooting.

Hey guys, finally getting my gear to reload. First time dealing with the Hybrids but what do they typically like .020 jump?

Since I'm reloading for matches the velocity is what it is after doing a OCW test. No way to increase velocity with out getting off the node, correct?

Mine liked the .02 jumps the best for the 140 hybrids. As far as velocity you're right you're going to want to find a nod in the velocity you're looking for.

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor

I see that some (most) you shoot bartlein barrels for the 6.5 creedmoor. I have a lulja barrel on a Remington short action. Do you find that you have to let the barrel warm up a bit before the rifle starts to perform well? I find that I need to shoot 5 to 10 rounds before the rifle settles in and gives good groups ie. quarter minute. I don't have this problem with the other rifles I own and it kind of tweaks me; mostly when shooting out past 800 yards. Also, whats your case life like? Because I see that some shooter's loads are 2-3 grains more than what most reloading books recommend. I'm still loading cases that have been shot 10 times or more. I'm loading 40+ grains of H-4350 with a 140 A-Max, out a 26" barrel. It's cronograghing at 2,625. I'll take less case life if I can add more velocity without the loss of accuracy. Maybe it's time to ditch my barrel for a different one? Please excuse my ignorance if you have already covered this subject before. This is my first post so I'm a cherry at this. "blush"

Re: 6.5 Creedmoor

Are you cleaning your barrel after everytime you shoot it? If you are that would make sense, your first several shots are fouling the barrel then once it reaches a level of fouling it likes the groups tighten up. As far as velocity, run another load development with those amax's maybe starting where you're at now and working up slow watching for pressure signs you should find another node around the ~42gr+ area.

I guess I never put my data up.

I'm using 142 SMKs
I've found 41.5 and 42 grains H4350 to produce .5 MOA groups out of my Ruger PR. Which is likely the best it'll get.
They chrono 2675 at 10' with a CED M2 chrono.
Now 41.5 chronos 2730 fps out of the 24" RPR barrel.

I'm taking them to 1000 yards in a couple weeks.

Went .015" off with H4350 but can't really find anything worth duplicating. I've always found it pretty easy to find a good load until I ordered 800 142 SMK's ?. I have a custom built 6.5 CM on a Rem action with a Krieger 22" Rem Varmint contour in a Manners EH 5 with chassis and magazine. I've got a NF 5-25x56 on top and I've really only shot factory loads in less than 1/2" moa. I do hand load but just got my dies for the 6.5. Does it matter a whole lot if I only have CCI BR2 and CCI 200 primers? I have Fed GM 215 and CCI Magnum primers for other calibers I load. I think I'm good on powders H4350, H4831sc, 8208xbr, Varget, Superformance, IMR4350-4831-3031, RL15. Question is I see most people using Fed GM210 but will the BR2 and 200 primers be fine?

Have used BR2, 210/210M with almost equal success, but on a steady diet of BR2's with shortage of 210M in San Antonio area. Any of the 140's and a starting load of 41.0 H4350 should get you going. Personally good results in 3 AR's and one bolt gun with Amax and 41.5 H4350. Easy on brass and runs between 2650 and 2800, from barrels between 21-26".

42.4 h4350 is a pretty common node that should get you up to 2790 fps. I've personally never shot any H4350 under 42.2 grains. But I've gone WAY above that. And 42.4 to 42.6 usually is IT

Just for jollies, has anyone here tinkered with pointing the 130 hybrids and seeing what the improved BC is? I know in the 6.5saum (yes, I know, different animal) the 130 vld jumps up to a BC of 0.600. Curious to see if anyone has been bored enough to stroll down that rabbit hole. If it will get within sniffing distance of the 140 hybrid BC, and I can run it faster, it might be worth it for giggles.

Since you have 24" Criterion and Varget, try some 108 Lapua's or 107 Sierra's-if you have them laying around-under 39.7 Varget. Great load in 4 Creedmoors, light recoil, easy on brass, starts moving around in the wind at 500, but still very accurate at distance. Runs around 2975-3025, depending on barrel length.

I just tried some out today in my 6.5 creedmore, 41.5 and 42 grains of h4350 Br-2 primers 2.850 oal shot in the 1's and low 2's. I will get velocity numbers later.

on a side note the factory 140 eld ammo wouldn't group very well at .5-.75 moa in my gun.

Accuracy International AX308 2015

Graduous 6.5 CM barrel 26 inch, 1:8 twist (OTM tactical)

Hornady Brass, primer pocket uniformed, trimmed 1.916, stainless steel tumbled. Whidden FLS Bushing die, then expanded with expander mandrel die.

Primer: FG210M
Chronograph: prochrono for load development then magneto speed to confirm

Jam OGIVE lengths using a Hornady OAL gauge and bullet comparator inserts: L-scenar 139 gr 2.284, B-hybrid 140 gr 2.259, B-hybrid 130 gr 2.257.

Lapua Scenar 139 gr, 2.254 OGIVE, H4350 41.9 @ 2815 FPS (on average)

Berger Hybrid 140gr, 2.254 OGIVE (coincidence), H4350 42.6 @ 2805 FPS (below two targets are all 5 round groups....as you can see it's not a coincidence that these shoot 1/4-3/8 MOA). Seated 0.005 off the lands.

image_119.jpeg

image_116.jpeg

Berger 130 AR Hybrid, 2.242 OGIVE, H4350 43.5 gr @ 2899 FPS (mine as well say 2900) Below is the OCW test the 43.5 gr is the 5 round one hole target. It's not quite in the middle of the node where it's flat; but, it's between the lowest and highest so to me it's middle. It's loaded 0.015 off the lands... going with it.

My 6.5 Creedmoor will be finished soon - Surgeon 591 action, Barlein barrel, MPA chassis, and Vortex Gen II Razor. I have 200 Hornady 143 ELD-X and 200 Berger 140 Hybrid bullets. What do y'all recommend for dies? I've never loaded for 6.5. Thanks in advance for your advice. From the Big Empty, ELN.

I found my node for the 130 berger target @ Ogive 2.202, Br2 primers, H brass between 43.2 and 43.6 (I loaded up every 0.2 gr) but even across my 8 loads (42.6 to 43.8) it was very flat. Am shooting 24" bartlein on my new custom GAP bolt gun based on a tempest.

So going to investigate more between 43.3 to 43.5 in .1 increments ... and then play with bullet seating. Got some 130 berger Ar hybrids coming ....

Just finished testing the new led match loaded from 42.0, 42.2, 42.4, 42.5 42.6, 42.8 4350

The 42.0 and 42.5 shot the best, about 5/8th each.

Loaded all 20 off the lands.

This same rifle shoots my Berger load 20 off with the 42.5 at 3/8th inch so I am going to go with the 42.5 and play with the al a bit to see how much I can tighten the load up.

I found my max OAL using the Hornady tool to be 2.241" to ogive using Berger 140 hybrids.

Started load workup at 2.22" to ogive with 40gr of H4350, going up in .5gr increments to 41.5.

Does this sound right? This is my first time loading precision rounds and I want to get it right.

Bought a Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor last fall. Shot a superb 10 shot group with 140 SMK's the first time out and have been trying to reproduce it ever since. Finally hit the magic combo today.

139 Scenar

42.0gr H4350 produces 2820fps with consistent velocities

.025" off the lands.

The load looks more like a shotgun pattern at 42.5gr

Ten fit easily under a dime at 42.0gr

May drop to 41.8 or so in the future as ambient was around 60 degree F

Try this if you are having the same experience....what a relief to fine THE load.

I just bought a 6.5 Howa Gameking and I am going to start reloading. This is super helpful! Just wondering, measuring to ogive vs COAL, is there a huge difference(I know there is some depending on the meplat) if I use the same grain, brand and model bullet?

Always load to the ogive. Your COAL will fluctuate here and there do to the difference in bullet lots.

Ive gotten the exact same results across summer and winter temp ranges using 4451 in place of H4350. I use roughly 1 grain more powder to achieve the same velocity across the board of temps. I was trying to keep a lid on it so it doesn't get sold out everywhere but it's an amazing powder for the 6.5 Creed, in my experience. Multiple 1/4 MOA groups at 100 and lots of consistent impacts out to 1k.

Using IMR 4451 and 18 degrees vs 75 degrees I saw a shift of 8 FPS so I'm willing to say it is pretty temp stable.

Thus far on my AXMC with 26" Bartlein barrel, I've gotten these ladder test results using H4350, BR2 Primers, Prime (Norma) brass, and Berger 130 AR Hybrids @ 300 yards:

Ladder%206.5.jpg

I really haven't seen much in the way of pressure, even at 44.2 grains. I loaded up another ladder from 44.0 to 44.9 in .1 increments but haven't shot it yet... is that too hot?? My ladder test indicates maybe there is another node in the low 44's... it would be nice to have more data.

I only chrono'd 43.4gr at 2830 fps, which seems slow for a 26" barrel compared to many others on here. Is this possibly due to barrel break-in? My target velocity for 130 Hybrids is about 2900 fps, though now I'm nervous to push past 44 grains since nobody else seems to be going that high.

I'm seeing about the same, though my velocity is about 50 fps slower (26" bbl). Not sure about why that is, unless Prime is a roomier brass case.

5 shot group at 800 came out to 6" even with the horizontal "flyer" that was probably my fault. Pretty happy with that so far.

Ok Ladies and Gentleman.
New to reloading so I'm here to learn . Me and my friend have most of the components. Not sure what CCI primers he has but they are for Bolt and Precision Rifle.
I have RPR in 6.5cm with Chad Dixon 26" barrel
We have 200 of 140 ELD - M bullets. Powder is H4350.
I also have once fired Hornady brass in 6.5 cm.
So my questions are....
What is the load to start with?
How much do you increase the load to test next batch to find that magic/consistent load?
What are the other powder choices besides H4350 that is so hard to find ?
What primers are the best or consistent?
Anybody that has RPR with 26" barrel willing to share their 6.5cm load?

Dimensions for bullet seating.

I'm learning any and all help is truly welcome.

Thanks.

First things first. Have you reloaded before? No, then please do yourself a favor and read all of the sticky posts in the Reloading forum. Then read the two threads on load development by GhengisAhn.

Then read pages 5-7 of this thread, every post. Bam! You have all the info to answer your questions.

I would start with 40g H4350 and step up 0.6 at a time to 43g and see what you get.

The previous posts all provide good info on IMR4350, H4451, and RL17 as viable replacements.

There was a thread on here a month or so ago that included a great discussion and actual testing done on the primer question. I believe that the take-away from that is that the Federal GMM were most consistent batch to batch, but there were others that worked nearly as well.

Bullet seating depth is a whole subject of its own, but it starts with you knowing where the lands are in your barrel.

Good luck and safe shooting.

No, but my friend has . He has the whole set up since he reloads for himself.

I will check other treads on here.

Thank you Lash :).

IMR4451/Berger 140 Hybrid

Fed GM210M

2x Hornady brass full length sized on standard RCBS dies and seated on same

Also, H4895 test with regular and reduced load data(only do this with H4895 if listed)

The 37.7 is over .1, no pressure.

While totally awesome, realize that that SD is luck. Litz measured the Magnetospeed to have a SD in its MEASUREMENT of about 5 fps, meaning even a perfect load would average 5 fps over a significant number of rounds. Anything below 5 is luck.

That being said, can you teach me to reload? Can I have your voodoo powder? Which chants do you utter as you pour your powder? Do you account for variations in the Earth's gravitational field?

Well done.

I hear ya. I'm happy with a load if the SD is anywhere below 10. SDs like this are certainly not an every day occurrence for me.

The only thing I can attribute this level of consistency to is the factory brass. The only thing I do is run it through the Giraud to chamfer and debur and get the OAL a little more consistent. Seems like the fresh stuff shoots better for me. Getting neck tension and runout perfect on the next firing is hard for me. I still use a Redding beam scale and trickle up every charge, but I do have a Prometheus on order. Can't wait for that!

Haven't tried the vihta, but the h4350 is so hard to find, I'm going to 4451. Tried a 1 pounder, and had good results, so 8 lbs are on the way. Figure I'll start load development all over, but it's all good.

I use Redding competition, it seems to work very well. I have a two die set for my 6.5 and have able to make very precise changes in loades by changing out the different neck sizing collets. A bit pricey but I'd say they're worthy it.

Thus far on my AXMC with 26" Bartlein barrel, I've gotten these ladder test results using H4350, BR2 Primers, Prime (Norma) brass, and Berger 130 AR Hybrids @ 300 yards:

Flyboy, fwiw, I'm shooting the 130 OTM Berger with 43.8 H4350, Hornady brass, Fgm210m, with bullet at 2.188" to ogive ( 2.810" COAL roughly). I shot a 5 shot string the other day with average MV at 2938 fps. This was confirmed at 495 yards ( 8.3 moa) and 700 yards (14.7 moa.... With 100 yard zero). Both groups were sub moa.
This is out of a GAP Crusader with a 26" 1:8 Krieger MTU. I also shot a 5 shot group at 100 yards while getting the charge "perfected" and it was .18 moa group. Really like these 130's.

I live n compete in FL. So I change my charge a lot. I totally switched to IMR 4451 since I got tired of chasing H4350 everywhere. I stay between 42.3 - 42.7 depending on the sunny days. H brass annealed, concentricly chamfered n I use ELD-M. I decided to perfect my shooting and brass instead of using Vergers Hybrids that I used to use.

NOW, why doesn't anyone discuss the real factors that affect this cartridge. Neck tension n neck thickness. Also, setting depth???????????

No point on discussing CBTO and COAL since we all have diff chambers.

Good rifle and too bad you are having an ammo issue. Can your local dealer order it?

As for zeroing, zero at 100, get your velocity and run it on a ballistic program. I like JBM Ballistics. It's free online and most important it works. You won't get 1000 yard data from a 100 yard target no matter how it's marked as the marks will have to be set for a velocity and bullet and anything different is going to be off. .

New to this forum, but I've read all 8 pages of this thread and lots of good info on here. Anyways,
I have a savage model 12 vlp topped with a sightron siii 8-32x56 scope, with a pre-fit criterion 6.5 Creedmoor heavy stainless 26" barrel from northland shooters supply, measures .815 at the muzzle. I've got about 500 rounds thru the barrel now, mostly reloads. I have been shooting 140gr hornady bthp with 42.4 H4350 and Imr 4350 and cci 200 primers, using rcbs 1010 scales, seating the bullet at 2.810 COAL (2.215 to ogive with hornadys OAL length gauge and bullet comparator) .035 thou off the lands. Some groups are 1/2, 1/4 inch and some have crazy fliers, I'm using hornady brass trimmed to 1.910. But I've never cleaned the brass just deburred and chamfered and primer pockets cleaned. Anything else I could do to get rid of the fliers?? I'm trying to get it a little more consistent from batch to batch. I've tried rl17 and imr4451 but haven't gotten very good groups in the 42-43gr range. Started seeing some pressure signs around 43.3 imr4451. The temp in middle Tennessee is about 85 right now. Any input would be appreciated.

Three items to consider
  1. Have you checked for copper fouling in the barrel?
  2. Are you neck sizing? I use a .289 bushing.
  3. Cleaning your brass should be in your routine for brass prep. I use an ultrasonic cleaner and trim for growth after each load cycle.

Yes I clean the barrel about every 40-50 round, but still with this criterion barrel I don't see much copper fouling at all opposed to the ruger m77 varmint target 6.5 i had, so I may be cleaning it to early, but I do need to start cleaning the brass haha,I've just been having good luck without doing it. And no I have not been neck sizing although I do have a Lee neck sizing die, I just full length size everytime, I used to crimp them as well, but I stopped doing that bc I was not seeing any difference in the groups. I was assuming I needed to play with the seating depth a little more. I could be wrong tho.

Just finished my build and break in. Shot first groups today and started load development. 40.5 grins H4350 ,Hornady 140 HPBT, FGM210M primers in New Hornady brass seated .050 off the lands. Shot 4 different loads in 4 different groups,18 rounds total, and all 18shots would fit in a 1inch square. Got to find a longer range for load development.

I've had a hard time finding any H4350 anywhere except online and I'm sorry, I'm just not paying the $25 hazmat fee. Not worth it to me. That being said ive worked up a good load with IMR-4350 which I can find almost anywhere. Here is my load data.

Redding S/type dies
.288 neck bushing
140gr. Berger Hybrid
Hornady brass
42.5gr. IMR-4350
CCI BR2 primers
.002 off lands
2710 FPS

This is shot with my new Savage 10BA Stealth 24" barrel completely stock with a Vortex 6-24x50mm tactical scope. Very nice rig for under $2000. Worked up a good load that shot groups in the .18" range at 100yds. but was too slow at 41gr. and 2550fps. Settled for a test group of .293" and at a better 2710fps which suits me for 1000yds and beyond. Hope this helps for anyone struggling like I was to find H4350 in stock. I'd post pics of my grouping but not sure how to post pics!!

Update to my last post: I picked up some IMR-4451 today to test. It's supposed to be the closest thing to H4350 as far as insensitivity to temperature variances. I'm going to run some tests and would be happy to post results when finished and pics if someone could help me out with how to post pics.

Almost my exact load, any chance you could run your ballistic solver with 6500 DA 65 degrees? I'm interested in the MIL come ups @ 640 yds, 840 yds and 1040 yds. Thanks sir, trying to figure out an issue with my ballistic solver.

Anyone playing with RL16 yet? Alliant's test data is showing higher velocities at the same pressure, lower SD, and less temperature sensitivity compared to the old standby of H4350. Density of RL16 is slightly lower than H4350 so it takes a little more RL16 compared to H4350 to match the pressures but the data looks really good.

Early reports on other forums are very promising regarding velocity/SD/accuracy.

Even though I'm sitting on quite a bit of H4350 I have some RL16 on the way and will be testing with it soon. Just wondered if anyone else on here is already experimenting with it...

I'm new to the 6.5 but not new to reloading. What do y'all recommend for 120 gr Speer SP and a Ruger American? I just got it and haven't had a chance to check the OAl or anything. I did however put 60 rounds thru it using the Hornady Match 120 gr A-max and are loving the results. I'm getting 1 1/2" to 2" groups at 300 yards.

I'm looking forward to being on this site and looking around.

Barnes 140 Match Burner
2.214" to ogive
1x Hornady brass
41.9 grains H4350
FGM210M primers
26" DTA barrel with SilencerTech suppressor

Today was the first time I tried these bullets. Advertised G1 of 0.586 was REAL close and Ballistic AE G7 drag model gave me a 0.293 G7. Called for 8.14 mils of elevation to get to 1080 yards. I needed 8.2 to get on target, so pretty damn close to advertised. I still want to play around with seating depth to tighten up the groups, but it really looks promising.

I've seen some RL17 loads here and there, it seems to be slightly more available in my area so I picked up a pound to work into some load dev. Seems like 40-41gr is the sweet spot for alot of you, hopefully it will be the same for me.

I really like RL17 in my 6.5 loads. As you said, it seems to be more available in my area as well and it's performed really well for me. Granted, I've read all the reports about its temperature sensitivity, but I did my load work in the middle of summer when the temps were in the 90s or higher. For 140 grain projectiles, the node does seem to fall somewhere between 40 and 41 grains, but work up safely, your results may vary, and all the other legal stuff.

Edit: For what it's worth, I get better velocities with RL17 while using less powder than H4350. Not an apples to apples comparison, but I use 41.9 grains of H4350 with the Barnes 140 Match Burner and my MV is 2806. With 40.4 grains of RL17 and a Hornady 140 BTHP, I was in the 2850 range

I think this might be the first Reloder 16 load in this thread, so hopefully we'll see a few more. I've found, in limited testing, that Reloder 16 is producing very respectable results in 6.5CM

1x Hornady brass (FL sized, trimmed, chamfered, deburred, etc)
140 Barnes Match Burner @ 2.203" to ogive
CCI BR2 primer
42.0 grains of Reloder 16
Testing started in the morning at 54º, up to 62º in the afternoon, 6931' ASL, 23.50 inHg
Velocity was really good at 2847 fps, SD of 7.4, ES of 20 measured with a MagnetoSpeed V3

Here's the link with some more info, including a comparison between an equal load of H4350 and RL16

I too have had good results with reloder 16 this past couple weeks. My current load is
42.4/42.5 reloder 16 measured with rcbs 1010 scale
Hornady brass 3x fired, trimmed to 1.905 deburred and chamfered, cleaned with thumblers tumbler with stainless media
Hornady bthp 140gr loaded at 2.800 OAL, 2.205 to ogive (2.250 touching lands, using OAL gauge and comparator)
CCI 200 primers (can't find gm210m or cci br2 primers anywhere!)
Used redding type S match dies
Micro seating die and neck die with .289 bushing. Also have a .290 bushing to try soon. Shooting out of a savage 12 with 26" criterion barrel. I've had pretty good results with these powders so far.
Reloder 16
Reloder17
H4350
Imr4350
Imr4451, all in the 42gr range.
I don't feel like the cci 200 primers are very consistent tho, does anyone else have this opinion?

david59, if you check load data site for Accurate/Ramshot powders, you'll not find the bullets you have listed for the HUNTER powder loads. Here is the Ramshot data for similar grain bullets.

123 gr Sierra MK 42.3 start.......47 max
140 gr Hdy A-max 40.8 start........45.3 max
142 gr Sierra MK 41.1 start........45.7 max

By the way, love the way the Ramshot rifle powders meter for me and keep five of them for my reloading.

Yeah, I know those spread and dev numbers are pure luck, planets aligning, etc., but I'll take them for today! I tested 41.2, 41.5, and 41.8 grains. Avg MVs of 41.5 and 41.8 were excellent (2871 and 2887, respectively). SDs were under 10, and ES was low for 41.5, but at 41.8 the spread was 23 fps and groups started opening up. No pressure signs on the brass itself at 41.5 grains. Slight flattening and cratering at 41.8 grains.
