Agreed. If you're going to spend the $ on Lapua brass, and will shoot it in a standard length short action, you might as well make it a 6.5x47L. Don't forget that for the Grendel you'll also need a bolt with a PPC bolt face, which limits your rebarreling options down the road unless you buy a new bolt.

Re: 6.5 grendel bolt action

IF you can find one of the Remington mini-mausers they imported, chambered in 7.62x39, a simple barrel swap and bedding job and you are good to go. There are other options for brass out there, Wolf Gold and Hornady both sell loaded ammo and hornady sells the brass.
FWIW, Charles Daly used to import the same rifles, Remington got the rights then pro, ptly quit selling them. You might be able to find one somewhere.
CZ makes a 527 chambered in 7.62x39, but it is a bit on the pricey side (the one I looked at, they may have an inexpensive, base model).
It is an intriguing cartridge, but all in all, you would probably be better served building a 6.5 creedmore.

Re: 6.5 grendel bolt action

I built a 26" bolt Grendel. I get around 2550 out of it. I would agree their is better choices like the 6.5x47. This will be twice the gun. I plan on using the barrel and rechambering to a 47 or sell the gun.

The bolt I used a 223 bolt and the gunsmith tooled it to the correct size and used a sako extractor. Then I made it a single shot. It shoots great. Good luck

I have a 6.5 Grendel in AR-platform and it has 18" barrel and get about 100-140fps faster than that. (123gr Lapua Scenar handloads)

Re: 6.5 grendel bolt action

I already have a 6.5x47, considered another one but I want a light compact hunting rifle, and want something a little different.... would be happy with 2600 with 123s or 130s out of a 20"

Re: 6.5 grendel bolt action

I've got a Sako Vixen in 6.5 Grendel.
24" Lilja barrel, and Hightech stock.

I use it for hunting and longrange/BR. At a 550yard competition in the unlimited-class I fired a 10 round group of 12.25mm, or 4.82 inches.
I still have the target.

I use 130grs Norma Golden Target and 130grs Swift Scirocco II,
with 26.5grs of VV N140 in Lapua brass and remington primers.
V0 = 2300 fps. I'm not chasing a hot load and flat trajectory,
if so I would've gone with 123grs Scenar and 123grs A-max.
As of now, with the Norma/Scirocco the best 4-shot group has been 0.2moa,
and it averages 0.5-0.7moa. I don't wanna mess with other loads as long as I get that kind of accuracy out of it.
When I'm done with the Norma/Sciroccos I have left I probably will try out some 123grs stuff and some hotter loads though.

I think its worth to mention that the Scirocco II's show clear signs of tumbling at 550 yards, while the Norma Golden Target does not. I don't know why that is, they both have the same v0.

It's deadly accurate out to 600 yards, however there is a real difference between 600 yards and 650 and onwards. After 600 yards it's not nearly as consistent as up to and including 600.

I also use a telescopic and modular Atec CTM-4 suppressor. It comes with four modules, I only use two. When I've burnt through the two that are on now, I'll replace with the two I've put away.

Here it is, by the way:

Why not run an 18-20" 6.5 CM or 260 or 6.5-6 Super LR?

The Super LR is formed from 243 cases and has the capacity of the 260 with the sharp shoulder and long neck of a x47 or CM round.

Dies are available from Redding in 6mm Super LR and it's not hard to put a new bushing in it and have the 'smith ream open the passage to 6.5mm clearance, Lapua brass is available and you get a more capable round which you can download to 2600 fps with 123-130's if you want to cut down blast or recoil or barrel life increase of whatever.
