Reloading for the first time and only have Alexander Arms data.
My load for .243 is 44g 4381sc and thta's way over the called for data. The lawyers give the mfg's lots of outs. So if you will be so kind and save me a lot of back and forths, etc.
Alexanders Arms 6.5 Grendel, 24" barrel, once fired their brass, 123 Lapua bullets, Varget powder.
I'll be going out to 600 yards.
Thanks in advance for all your help
Ben

Re: 6.5 Grendel receipe

Acc. 2520 powder preform great for me or Rl-15 at 29.5 grs. I would start at a lower powder charge and work my way up to a safe load.

29.5grs 2520
205GM
Lapua brass
2.414 COAL

This is for a bolt gun.

Re: 6.5 Grendel receipe

Varget is not a very good choice for the Grendel.

Stick with the ball powders to get a higher velocity.

I have a really good accuracy with the 123gr. Lapua Scenars and 30.2gr. Win748 with my grendel platform.

These powders are great with the Grendel:(stick with these powders and you wont be sorry)
AA 2520
TAC
Win748
BL-C(2)

Actually I have loaded up some 123gr. Scenars w/ 28.0gr. of Varget just to see what they shoot like. Im curious to see what Varget will do but EVERYBODY I know that shoots a Grendel says "forget about Varget for the 6.5 Grendel, it doesnt work for it." I have not got around to testing them yet.

Re: 6.5 Grendel receipe

Are there any other powders that will get near the temp stability of Varget and be better suited to the Grendel?

The 4 powders i listed above are going to be your best choices for the Grendel.

If you like the VV powders, N-140, N-530, N-540 work well with some loads also.

With 26.1gr. of N-530 and the 107gr. Sierra Matchkings is also a good load to try.

You and about the other 98% of the Grendel owners that reload!

The only 4 powders I use for ALL my different Grendel reloads are:

Win748 w/ 123gr. Lapua Scenars
BL-C(2) w/ 120gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip
Ramshot TAC w/ numerous bullets
Accurate 2520 w/ numerous bullets.

The thing is the 3 powders I add to this is Benchmark, VV N-140 and Varget and theres all my .223 (AR-15) powders I use.

Re: 6.5 Grendel receipe

For my Les Baer upper in 6.5 Grendel w/24" barrel i started with 2230 and 120 grain Sierras - I got 2200 ft/sec.
I switched to 2520 and got nearly 2600 ft/sec.

My 'favorite' loads now are 123 grain A maxs and 123 grain Sierra BTHPs using 2520

Bill has a load data sheet [pdf] that you can see/download on his site[not sure if that's what you have].... 65grendel.com

As to "lawyered down" loads....for the 6.5 grendel , Bill has done extensive testing and the ctg. is working right at pressures , that if you try to exceed on the AR platform will let you know in the form of broken bolts.

I like my grendel on the AR platform but it is right at the limits of that platform. You might want to read up over on the forum and learn from some other's mistakes. Good to have a spare bolt anyway! [don't ask how I know!]

As to Varget...not the way to go w/ 123's
2520 and Tac are working exceptionally well for me w/123's but I am thinking of dropping down to the 107's...waiting for the temps here to get back down below 110* HA!

Good luck...great round
FWIW
YMMV

Re: 6.5 Grendel receipe

The word I'm getting over on the 6.5 forum is that 30.5 gr of AA2520 is about the best thing going for the grendel using 123 gr Lapua Scenars. The max load for 2520 is 30.7 gr. Some have reported really good accuracy with 29.5 and 30 gr also. You are just going to have to see what your gun likes to eat.

I do believe the AA Lapua factory ammo is using 30.5 gr behind the 123 scenars.

Re: 6.5 Grendel receipe

I have an Alexander Arms 19.5 inch Grendel, and a Lothar Walther barreled 18 inch Grendel. Both seem to like the same loads.

Tac and W748 have been the most consistent, and accurate. I use 30.3 of 748 with a 123 Scenar, Lapua brass, CCI-450 primer, seated to 2.260.

The Tac load is a 120 Sierra matchking, Winchester small rifle primer, Laupa cases, and 28.5 of Tac, seated to 2.220.

Neither load is really hot, but I want accuracy more than velocity. Either load will work REALLY well for the practical rifle, or practical rifle precision (sort of civilian sniper) matches out to about 600 yards.

Re: 6.5 Grendel receipe

Here are some 6.5 Grendel loads that worked well for me with a wide range of bullets:

Im shooting them out of a 18" Sabre Defense Barrel w/ a 1-7.5 Twist Rate.
The 123gr. Lapua Scenars and Win748 is by far the most accurate for me.
The "ball" powders work the best with the Grendel.

Re: 6.5 Grendel receipe

im using 29gr 2520 for my grendel load, I dont like pushing pressures, Im getting 2560-2580 FPS out of the 123gr Amax bullets with my 20 inch barrel, the hornady 123 amax factory loads were doing 2490-2530 in the same rifle.

Not getting expected velocity.
My 18" ARP barrel shoots 123g factory A-Max at 2536.

My load of CCI450, Accurate 2520 29.4g COAL 2.245 for a 123g SST light crimp is getting 2434. Using Magnetospeed on suppressor 10 shot SD 13.3 ES 44. Hornady once fired brass.

South Florida, so always warm and humid.
I'm not seeing any pressure signs, but .3 over book max already.

I did break an extractor once on factory A-Max running suppressor, but added an adjustable gas block since and all good.

I know magnum primers can drop velocity a bit, but not sure why I'm this low. Any thoughts? Suggestions?

I like 27.6gr of AR-Comp for the 123gr bullets.

Another vote for AR Comp. Testing a new 22" Wilson Combat barrel with 123CC Nosler, Lapua brass, RP 7 1/2 primers, both 27.2 gr at slightly different seating depths yielded 2.0 SD/2526fps at 2.258OAL and 1.7 SD/2538fps at 2.265OAL for 5 shot groups. Need some more seating depth testing and barrel break in to get to a final load, but 27.2-27.4gr of ARC has always given a good result. Burns cooler than most of the ball powders and is relatively temp insensitive. My experience with 7 different 6.5GR barrels that remain in constant lineup. That said, have used 8208/CFE223/TAC and others with positive results, as well.
