Hello all, I am new to the site so im just going to throw it out there. I have recently purchased an Alexander Arms 6.5mm in an AR 15 platform machined from single piece of aluminum, 24" SS bull barrel, timney trigger @ 2.5lbs, GG&G bipod and the most recent arrival is the S&B PM II 56mm (12 x 50) 34mm optics. I am new to the AR platform as well as S&B optics...
I have alot of concerns about assembly. I have a local gun shop here that is building everything for me. Should i be concerned about anything? I mean i have about 5 grand tied up in this gun so far and not too confident that the shop has all the skill that i would like for assembly. I'm sure there are some checks that i should be asking about? Anyone?

Sincerely,
Coyote Killer

Off the top of my head, a few questions come to mind:

1. What mount are they going to use? Is it cantilevered? Will you have the eye relief optimal for your preference?
2. How will they insure the scope's level in the mount?
3. What are the torque specs for the mount? (if not a throw lever)
4. What are the torque specs for the rings?

It should be a heck of a combo with that level of glass on top!
Enjoy.

As k2peaker said, make sure they torque everything to the correct spec (the manufacture of each of the parts should be able to tell you the recommended spec.) and ensure that the scope is level in the mount.

Re: 6.5 Grendel & S&B PM II 12x50

wtf? why the hell do you need a 12-50x scope on a grendel? are you going to use it for f class or benchrest? i would highly recommend you swap it for the 5-25 s&b especially if you are going to hunt with it.

if you just like high magnification well then to each there own i can't fault you for that, but i wouldn't consider it optimal for your current configuration.

Re: 6.5 Grendel & S&B PM II 12x50

WOW, Thanks for all the reply's... The shop I am purchasing from has ordered everything and assembled it. I did take it out and shoot it...Man it shoots sweet. Recoil like a .223 or less, I love it so far. Once i put a few down range I ordered the scope. YES I WENT A LITTLE overboard with the optics. What can i say, I love magnification. My goal is to push out to 1000-1500 with this gun so hopefully she comes together well. I think my biggest concern was answered. I should mount the scope myself. I am not sure that i can trust the shop to take the time that I would expect with the eye relief, tourque specs, mounts, etc. I have heard so much and after reading a bit out of the S&B manual last night I felt like I needed a second opinion and i should put the breaks on for a moment.
I have heard about trueing the rings...? So once the rings are mounted then there is a bore type lathe that runs through them to assure they are in line down to the thousanths with each other, then you mount the scope as not to stess the optics? Help me out on this... Also glues, Lock Tight???

Re: 6.5 Grendel & S&B PM II 12x50

Well the 6.5 is finally coming together... Got the scope on still loose until the Magpul PRS 3 gets here and can finalize eye relief and tourque her down. I loaded a quick video on youtube for you guys to checkout @--> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Mx4nlzEX38

I am now researching loads and have been tryig to do my homework so i dont get too beat up on S/H...(Being a Newby), and asking you guys a bunch of dumbass questions.

I think i have found what I like for this rifle but the more I read the more convoluted it gets sometimes. Not finding much on the 6.5 load data out there... What I did find interesting was here---> http://www.6mmbr.com/65grendel.html

I must say i am interested in the Lapua Brass W/ 130gr JLK showing a BC of .620??? I realize the above article is a bit old so i thought i would throw it out there and hear your thoughts.

So my questions are I'm thinking using the Lapua Brass and 130gr JLK...
Brand of powder? Primer? Any suggestions on load amount? Recommended FPS to get started?

Also I have a RCBS 2000Pro Progressive loader. Having a hard time finding dies?

Sincerely, Coyote Killer

You mentioned shooting to 1000-1500 yards. The 12-50 s&b is not optimal for extreme distances as the total elevation is limited. Depending on which turrets you got you might really be screwed. The mil/mil scope has about 17.5 mils of total travel through 5 turns and you can only get all of it if you get an exactly matched canted base. The 1/8 moa turrets are a little more flexible with about 75 moa through 5 turns. Whichever turret set up you got you will need a canted base for the flat top of the ar receiver. Badger makes a .5" tall 22 moa riser. Use this with standard 34 mm rings. Anything over 1" tall rings will be way too high. I use seekins .92 low rings on the badger riser on flat top.

If you got the mil turrets then you will probably have to get a custom canted ring set up from Near or someone like that as 22 moa wont be enough to get you anywhere.

According to Bill Alexander himself, the way to go regarding 1000+ yards with the Grendel is 108 Scenars.
I run 130grs Norma HPBT (0.548 bc) myself and regard it as a 700 yard rig. Trajectory is like a mortar. But the accuracy is incredible!
