So, I've got a bushmaster ar with an 18" barrel. I was wanting something with a little more oomph, but in an ar-15 size receiver. So, I was thinking about re-barreling it with a 6.5 Grendel barrel. Here's the question. Will an 18" aa lite barrel reach 1k? I was wanting to keep it pretty compact cause I want to suppress it. What's y'all's thoughts?

Re: 6.5 grendel

I have a 20" bbl LBC .264. It's fine to 900 yds, but is all over the place at 1000, shooting factory Black Hills 123 gr. A-Max. I'm too lazy to reload!

Re: 6.5 grendel

So far im shot to 500 with it. That bout what i can shoot here at my house. Taks bout 3.5 mils to 500. I need to go stretch it out & see. If you want to try it just send me a PM & ill give you my info.

Re: 6.5 grendel

I am looking for ballistic info for 6.5 grendal 123 gr. Hornady A-Max. out of a 18 inch barrel. Everything I have read is for 16 inch and 24 inch. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Re: 6.5 grendel

I've seen quite a few 18.5s do that. I definitely would think it should with a good suppressor. All that said I think the Amax should do it but check your reviews a few barrels just don't like the hornandy. Its designed at the max of the chamber to fit tight in the chamber... my 24" it won't even seat it.

Re: 6.5 grendel

My 18" satern shoots the 123gn amax great. If i remember right im getting 2500 fps out of it with 8208xbr. Which is fine for me, im gona hunt with it & target shoot. Its not a bench rifle with a long barrel.

Re: 6.5 grendel

I picked up one of those AR stoner barrels from midwayusa way back when they had them on sale as I was kind of broke at the time. It started as a 24 inch barrel but honestly didn't shoot to great so I figured I wouldn't loose anything cutting it back to 21.5 and putting a suppressor on it. Turns out that was the ticket and now it is my best shooting semiauto I have. I have only shot it out to 250 so far as that was all I had access to but I can do something to help you out a bit.
I havn't played around in quickload in a while and I feel like it so I will let you know what it tells me for inputting the velocity for hornady factory ammo with the barrel reduced to your 18".

Re: 6.5 grendel

Thanks for the info guys. Right now I am shooting 3/4 MOA at 300 yrd. Just wondering how the A-Max will hold up out to 600 yrd. That is as far as I can reach out to at home. Heading to Kentucky in a month or so. Then I will be able to reach out to 1k+.

You got a link to a place that sells the Black Hills 6.5G ammo?

Re: 6.5 grendel

So there isn't a powder listed that can make hornady's listed velocity on their ammo using anything listed in quickload. Little bit of a bummer. I did do some checking on numbers listed on the linked page at the top here and my numbers are close enough matches to not be worth relisting. However if you have a specific load you want checked I can give you an idea of what kind of velocity you would get out of your barrel with that load.

Re: 6.5 grendel

Not bad for Hornady 6.5G 123gr Amax ammo out of a $200 18" SPR weight 264LBC barrel. First 5 rounds fired for group at 100 yds.

What brand of barrel are you using? What is the twist rate in it?
