6.5 PRC action - Tikka, Savage or other???

Did you think it is necessary to remove the radius on the front of the Tikka action before installing a new barrel. The internet is 50/50 on it.
If you go look at some of the barrel makers doing Tikka shouldered prefits like Proof,Carbon 6,PVA and I'm sure some of the others. They are already contouring the barrels down to factrory specs in the 1.1 range so no need to remove the radius.

I haven’t had the radius removed on any of my Tikkas. I prefer shouldered barrels in general as a matter of personal preference so it was never a question for me to remove it.

As others have said, removing it allows you to use the more commonly found 1.200” shank prefit barrels and barrel nuts, but to me, I would be paying for custom shouldered barrels anyway even if there weren’t any shouldered prefit options.

Really just comes down to different strokes. Both have their merits and it’s up to you to decide which is going to suit you better in the long term.

Lots of good options. Thanks for the input.

I'm not sure I'd remove radius, mine was done 7 yrs ago, well before there were shouldered prefits. I do think that if you run a barrel nut, the flat face of action is better than a nut fitting against radius.

Where did you see that. May wait to purchase

I'm guessing 9 months out?

I was thinking along the same lines as the OP, so I found a good used SS Tikka T3X in 300 win mag, bought the Mesa precision Tikka stock when they had a special, and a 22” Proof sendero light 6.5 8 twist to build a 6.5 PRC.

As posted earlier, Mike at Hells Canyon Armory is making Tikka WSM/SAUM magazines that allow a COAL of 3.38 and also have shoulder stops to keep the cartridge from moving forward under recoil. Uses the factory Tikka bottom “metal” or can upgrade with the Mountain Tactical billet one.

Now I just have to decide if I want to use the proof since it’s a 4 groove and guys are having issues with the 147....
