Like to hear from those who have used any Amax/Scenar/SMK on deer/hogs, etc.

Please give info ie. mv/range and results.

Thanks.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Below is a pick of an ENTRY wound on an old Fallow Buck Deer with Berger 130gr Hunting Projectile from my 6.5x47 lapua average speed for that load is 2680 fps so not that fast, range was aproximately 180-200 yards. This Deer was a tough old animal but I was not impressed with the performance in this instance. Its a shame because the load shoots bug holes.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Thanks for sharing, what is the impact spot on the deer?

Curious on your barrel length, I know the 130 will do 2780-2850 range in a 260/22" and thought you might get 2750-2800 in a 47/22".

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

I have shot a few things with 123 A-max,

lung and headshots, DRT has been the proven track record,

318 meters at a roe doe, and 90 meters headshot for a fallow stag.

No pics though. I use a 6,5x47L @ 890-910 m/s out of a 26 inch barrel.

The impact is high on the shoulder but a little to far towards the neck (my bad shooting)

My barrels is 26" long and my load is quite mild; 36gr varget behind the 130 Berger. My rifle just loves that load. I have begun trying to work up a load for the 140 AMAX and have promise with this bullet and AR2209 (4350 for you guys I think) in the low 2700 fps range but want to give RE 17 a go.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Not exactly what you asked for, but the 120 Nosler BT has proven unbelievably deadly on whitetail at ranges from 15-100yd (only opportunities I've had thus far), at the pedestrian muzzle velocity of 2650fps.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Good stuff guys, Boiler, reduced 260 load or ???

Thanks.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Wasn't intended to be a reduced load, but compared to the 2900fps most 120gr loads have, I suppose it is (although it has ~300fps more velocity than Rem Managed Recoil loads). Funny story for how it came about.

I was brand-new to reloading and the only powders I had were W760 and H380. I looked in the book, split the min and max loads for H380 straight down the middle, loaded it one thousands beyond "max OAL", checked the loaded rounds in the rifle for feed/cycling, and went shooting.

And with the first load, the rifle shot MUCH better than Remington 120gr Nosler BT factory loads. So well I stopped development right there, especially after seeing its performance on game. Figured it was slower than factory ammo due to slightly reduced recoil, but didn't realize just how much slower it was until I got my chronograph this summer.

I've got some 140gr SGKs to try, and I'm thinking of trying Varget to get another 150-200fps with the 120s, but my H380 load just works...

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Boiler - you are doing fine- shot placement ALWAYS comes first, and usually wins the day

Thanks for the info sir.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

6.5BR, unrelated question, but I'm in Shreveport once or twice a month for business and often have time on my hands...any good rifle ranges or places to get reloading gear around Shreveport/Bossier other than Bass Pro on the LA Boardwalk?

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

I have shot the 123 scenars in a grendel with mv of 2590 and was not impressed with the terminal effects. For targets it was the cat's azz, but shooting groundhogs from 150-300 meters they never once opened up. Of course they were never meant to be a hunting round. At any rate, a kill is a kill but see the results I would not suggest using them on game other than vermin and animals you don't mind looking for or killing "right now" (which should be everytime) Not knocking them! I just quit using them on animals.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Another fan of the 120 BT on game. Albeit in a 6.5 rem mag, it is the only bullet I've seen drop large hogs in their tracks with a double-lung hit. Have to confirm, but off top of my head think MV around 3100 in a Rem 660. Very impressive.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Thanks.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Havent tried the 130s but have been running 140 Bergers in my 6.5Creedmoor at 2950fps. All shots have been 300-350 yards so far. Super accurate and all kills on deer have been 1 shot, DRT. Just dont shoot them in the shoulders as you will destroy every bit of meat in the area.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

I shot a nice antelope buck with my GAP .260 yesterday with a 130gr Hunting VLD at 470 meters. It worked good....

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

I've shot several coyotes, a fox, a few coons, many crows, and a buzzard with the 130gr Berger VLD's (Target). All have been in the 100yd-300yd range. They have all been 1 shot DRT. This is out of my 6.5x47L.

It's all about shot placement, regardless of bullet type. A deer/pig hit broadside in the vitals (heart/lungs) with any 120-130 gr pill is going to die within minutes. A whitetail, is in my opinion, thin skinned game so it's not like we are shooting at Rhino's here. I'll be using this same load to harvest deer this year as well as a Elk (maybe). I have full confidence in it.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

shot a deer in kansas with a 140g vld out of my 260 last year worked just perfect

a 130g vld would of worked just as good, i like berger vld's performance on game

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Shot this black grouse today with 123gr Scenar. (6,5x55) 2516fps, 112 yards. The bullet broke some chest bones on the way in but the bird looked like it was stabbed with a pen. Heart was missing about 1/4 piece, so it was dead before it hit the ground.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Neat pic -thanks.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Shot a doe this weekend with the following:

123 A-max @ 2700 fps.
Distance: 393 yards.

I was a couple tenths of a mil off and hit high, breaking the spine, DRT. Bullet destroyed the spine and kept going.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

I vaporized one running a 105/2850 from a 6BR, into a deer's spine about 200 yds, facing away, I was shooting from an elevated stand. Impact speed matters esp. when hitting bone. Moments later dumped another broadside lung shot, golf ball exit around 400 yds (field pre-lasered).

Congrats on your doe, nice shot.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

I have good results with both the 120 Nosler and 123 Amax.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

8 whitetail down with my 6.5-280AI with the 130gr berger. approx 3250fps. all of them were down within 10 yards. 2 with the 140gr amax. wasnt really happy with this one. 1st was fine, broadside chest at 320 yds. the inside was soup. the second was a buck quartering on at 255 yds. the front shoulder was Destroyed, but the bullet blew up and only went in about 3-4 inches. my buddy finished him with a head shot from his 6br. no problem with performance on that shot!

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

I've already posted this in another thread, but here it is again. 130 Berger at 2935, 60 yards, nothing but lungs. He went about 30 yards.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Nice buck, good feedback guys. On those Berger 130s, do you feel they penetrate more than a 140 Amax? Just curious.

I see both as 'softer' bullets but well esp. well suited for long shots on deer sized game.

Thanks.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Anyone have updates this season?

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Here's one from this season. 130gr VLD launched at 2850ish. Buck was hard quartering to at about 100 yards. DRT.

Here's a few from last season. Same load.

I like them a lot. Animals seem to make fewer tracks for me after hit with the VLDs than with other bullets.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

I've been using the 130 HVLD's and 140 Amaxes out of my .260 this season on whitetails and have been very happy with 'em. Albeit, they've all been taken with head/neck shots so I can't really speak to the performance of these bullets on vitals shots, but I think there's plenty of evidence on this forum alone that supports their use for hunting. Pictures and video from this season are linked below.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Thanks guys, nice rifle/hunts there John. Looking up that thread.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Use the 130gr Berger VLD Hunting bullets on Pronghorn, deer and pigs and you will get the results we got. DRT on one shot from 15-760 yards. In both 6.5x55 @ 2700fps and 6.5x284 @ 3000

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

I use 140 Mks on coyotes, horrible on fur, if that's what you're after, but lethal. After 450 I have a lot more confidence in the bullet. 3100 6.5x06 ai

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Gave up on 140 amax. In my gun if you hit bone with that bullet your tracking skills must be very good! For some reason, 140 Bergers don't do good in my 26 inch 1/8 twist? The 130 Bergers are the cat's meow. Performance is excellent on deer with the vast majority drt, I run the 130's 20 off but had best results with 140's 120 off. (and that wasn't something to brag about). Never tried 140 on game because I was not pleased with groups. The groups were less than a inch but not one ragged hole like the 130's.

Re: 6.5 s - anyone killing w/123s or 130 Bergers

Thanks again.
