is there an optimal twist for a relatively short 22" barrel? 1:8 vs 1:8.5? or other? will faster twists in this caliber have a significant effect on barrel life?

I can tell you the 6.5x47L Jon built for me shot just as well with 37.5gr Varget 130 Bergers Jammed the same with a 25" Krieger.

Almost all 6.5x47L's shoot well at, or within a few tenths of a grain of 37.5gr of Varget with the 130gr Bergers. Preston Prichett of Surgeon Rifles told me to try that load and it just plain works. </div></div>

So far this is my best load right there 37.5 of Varget and 130's

Trevor, have you got your shorty 6.5 yet? Interested into seeing what velocity you will get. I'll hopefully be having Mr. Beanland build me my first full on custom in April. After 65 rounds in the 6.5 barrel I put on my Savage, I'm defiantly in love with this round and will be having it on the build.

I don't think you can go wrong with either 1x8 or 1x8.5 twist. I have one of each and really can't tell the difference. I shoot the berger 130's and 140's out of both.

Me too. I have 2 of them now and my third one is one the way. Great balistic's and very little recoil.

My GAP 6.5x47 is proving to be a great shooter. I spec'ed a "no-turn" neck,chambered for 130 VLDs fed from AICS mag.

So far, it seems to prefer Varget. My load right now is:

130 gr VLD
38.0 gr Varget
CCI #41 (also working with BR-4s and 450s)
Just touching the lands
This has yielded right at 2900 fps, however, Ballistic FTE says I'm running about 2940 fps to match my dope given conditions tested out to 650. Perhaps my chrono is off?

I did manage a .6" group at 300 yards with it last trip out and several .1-.2" five rounders at 100. 10 round groups have been well under .5" at 100.

Whose VLDs are you using? Berger or JLK...
Also, what BC are you using?

I did a drop test on my 130gr JLKs and it predicted 2940fps (26" barrel). I own two chronos and one says 2890 and the other says 2940... so I'm pretty sure I'm at 2940 and one of my chronos sucks

Berger VLDs. I've used the pre-programmed BC in Ballistic FTE and done custom off G7. I'm guessing my chrono just isn't dead on.

Basically if I set my velocity to 2940, the predicted drop matches (selecting the Berger 130 VLD from the pre-programmed bullet list)almost perfectly. My barrel is 26-27" depending on your measuring method. I'm seriously more than happy with the performance, but I am seriously considering chopping it to 20 or 22" to be handier once my can shows up.

ETA: Its a Shilen Select Match 1:8" twist #17 contour. Stock is a Manners 90% carbon. Despite the moderate barrel weight, it is certainly muzzle heavy. I've got a mini-chassis coming I may drop it in and see how she shoots.

What's your load? I'm in the dame boat with a 30" Kreiger barrel but using Re17 and SMK 142's. Curious to see what my velocity will be with 39.5gns. What's your coal and powder charge?

Thank you. That's a smokin fast load. 41.9 is the highest I've gone with no pressure signs but had good results. May have to do some more tinkering around with that load.

38.3 is a hefty dose of Varget. I've went as high at 37.5 and it was crunching when seating the bullet to AI mag length. Regardless, its impressive and I'm glad to see the AIAW beating custom BR rifles at their own game.

I sold my 6.5x47 a few months back. Should have never done that. I plan on building another here this year. Was a great match and all around rifle. You will like the round. my 8.5 twist had no issues with 142 smks out to 1000+ over 41gr of h4350 and a br4.

From what I read in the Sierra manual, the #41 primers should preform the same as the 450's

For you guys that are considering a shorter barrel, this is what I get out of a 22" 1-8 twist Shilen barrel:
41 gr H4350
130 g Burger VLD .010 off the lands
Oehler 35p Chrono
2838 fps
19 es
8 sd

I stopped at 41 gr of 4350 with the only pressure sign of primer cratering. I sent the bolt out to have the firing pin turned down and a bushing installed.
I'll keep testing but accuracy is excelent.

I swear, I must have a dog ass slow barrel on my Beanland build. I run the 130's and I'm blowing primers completely out at 42.5 of 4350 and all I'm gettin is 2,898 to 2,910 fps out of a 25" tube. Now, maybe my chrono is off, but my dope matches those numbers. I'm going to switch over to Varget and RL-17 like Jedi is shooting.

*Edit: let me clarify. I'm happy with a 130 at 2,900fps, I'd just like to be able to get that speed without the pressure I'm running.

What bullet weights are you guys shooting to 1000? Whats the heaviest available for the 6.5x47? Im building one right now, and im having a hard time choosing a barrel. Im going to use this gun to hunt groundhog and coyote. Im trying to keep the weight down. what would give me the most accuracy: A 24in light palma spiral fluted, or a 26in #5 bull sporter? Krieger barrel im talking about.

i was shooting 142 match kings at 1k with good results at thunder valeey precisicon. im sure there are some that are doing better and never tried it. i had those on hand. mine was a 26" krieger. Only i couldent seem to get the velocities the others are getting. going by drop, i was right arount 2760

I'm running the Berger 130 vld's @2856fps 28inch barrel at 1k. That is what I have been using in the Fclass matches.

This makes me feel a little better because the new rifle will sport the AICS AX chassis/w a 30inch rock creek barrel.

I had the shop mount a 3 inch plate on the gun so it would ride the rest better.

what velocities do you think i could get out of a 24in barrel? im going to have it chambered for the berger vlds i think. I need to make it to 1000 at the farthest. Most of my groundhog hunting is within 600yds

I'm getting 2822fps with berger 130's, 2912fps with smk123's with moddest loads of H4350w my 24inch bartlien GA precision gun.

Jig Stick. I haven't had any problems shooting 123 Sencars (2912fps) and 130 VLD's (2825fps) to 1000. When I start getting my parts together for my next one (hopefully April). I'll be going with your first choice in barrels, the light Palma on either a Surgeon 591 or a Bighorn. Still haven't decided on which one yet.

To help with a few questions. If you're blowing primers, I would Bush the firing pin hole. Greg at Gre-Tan Rifles has some good info on this. Also, check if there are any other pressure signs. I would think 42.5 of 4350 is pretty hot. If your using the VLD's, seating depth is important. There is a good article on that from Burger. I'll post if I can find it.

I'd be happy with that velocity at 22"...heck I may just go for the 20". I think I may try it after next weekend's match if I get to make it.

I just got a load together using IMR 8208 for the 123 Lapua Scenar. I had been using RE15 but was looking for a powder that was more temperature stable. I tested charge weights up to 36.4 grains but found a real sweet spot at 35.8 grains. Initial shots through the chrono were averaging 2880 fps. The accuracy seemed to be a bit better as well. I'm heading out tomorrow to get some more shots through the chrono and check accuracy out to 1K yards.

Just for back from checking some chrono results. Same charge, BR 4 at 2890, 450s at 2865, and 41s at 2880.

Also ran some 140s with a stuff charge of Varget and got 1/2 MOA for 20 rounds minus two called flyers. Yielded 2896 average, no pressure signs.

Let me know what you end up with. I read that some people had some good results with it in 6mm. Your the first person I have seen that has tried it in 6.5. Have you used any H4350?

I have a bottle of H4350 but haven't tried it. Seems everyone that is using it is well over 100% case fill. I looked at it with QuickLoad before working up anything. I think the case fill was just over 92% with 100% burn. Although my velocities were not much more than with RE15, I did see a small improvement in accuracy. I'll post some results from tomorrow's shoot.

Just depends on what bullet your wanting to use. Also if you want to turn the necks or not. Also on how long you want the bullets to be seated. If your going to feed from a mag then you won't want them too long.

I'm using a .288 dia bushing. gives me .002 tension on no turn neck. I use lapua brass.

isn't all the brass in this cartridge made by 1 source, Lapua? I am not aware of any other sources nor any way of forming it from other cases....

If your having GAP build you a rifle in 6.5x47, you may want to do a bit of research, to atleast figure out that Lapua is the only one who makes 6.5x47 LAPUA brass.

This gave me a helluva chuckle.

Yes, Lapua is the only source for brass.

I'm running I believe a .288 or .287 bushing. I forget which, I dropped it in and haven't turned back. I believe I'm running .003" neck tension. I don't want to screw with that neck turning stuff right now.

So far the gun out-shoots me every time, and this is the first time I've had one that would.

Ok Id like a little confirmation here. From what im reading, I should have no problem getting a 140g Berger VLD to 1000yds with a 1:8 24in Krieger barrel? Im trying to keep the weight down on my build as this gun will most often be used while walking farms for groundhogs. Am I going to give up anything going from a 26in to 24in barrel? I know MV is going to drop a tad, but Ill probably never shoot past 1000yds

first run data thru a good ballistics program ie Ql etc

You will learn the following
short barrel 22" or less rigs are best served with 123gr bullets

24-26 barrels work best with 130 gr bullets

longer than 26 run 140gr bullets

Simply put short barrel cant produce velocity required to fully utilize BC of heavier bullet, thus negating any gain

Do your home work

We've been preaching this for years now. Do your homework before selecting a bullet people. It's not always the heaviest bullet that works out the best.
