6.5mm build???

for a .260 rem or a 6.5x47 lapua, (haven't decided which yet), would a 20" heavy barrel be to short to reach out 600 yards and what twist would I use to shoot the heavier 6.5mm bullets, 1:8?

the rifle will be use mainly for hunting whitetail and coyote.

I regulary shoot my 21" 6.5 Creedmoor at 800 and it's boringly accurate at 800.

.260 if you don't reload, either can easily get to 600, 1:8 if you're wanting to use 140s. Zak from TBAC wrote a great article comparing the 6.5s.

20" 260, expect 2700 +\- with 140s. Add 100fps with 130s, another 100fps with 123s.

Even a 16.5" 260 can push 140s at or above 2550fps.

To put that into perspective, a 6.5mm 140gr Hybrid at that speed has 7.3" less wind drift @ 1000yd than a 24" 308 pushing a 168 Hybrid @ 2800fps. Even a 140gr Amax at 2550 beats a 168 Hybrid at 2800 in the wind at 1000 (albeit just barely).

heck yes you can get to 600. You might give up a little velocity, but a shorter barrel is stiffer and, I think more accurate, than a long one...
