Range Report 6.5mm twist rate advice 1:8 or 1:8.5"

In my research, I have found that most are running 1:8" twists in 6.5x47L. I have also seen that 139 & 140 grain has a recommended twist of 1:9"

I would like to take advantage of the 139grain, but I don't want limit myself with my twist. I have a 1:8.5" from a a previous build that didn't go through. Will it be enough for the 139 grain, or should I step up to 1:8" to really get the full benefit?

Also, if it makes any difference, I would prefer to use a shorter barrel on the rifle for practical reasons.

8 or 8.5. I run an 8 twist in my 6.5 Creedmoor and it handles the 140s very nicely.

Re: 6.5mm twist rate advice 1:8 or 1:8.5"

If your going to be shooting 140/142 in cool/cold weather go with the 8 twist. 9's will yaw in cool weather err on the conservative side.

Re: 6.5mm twist rate advice 1:8 or 1:8.5"

1 in 9 on my 6.5XC, I can shoot up to a 147 gr bullet, 153gr's wouldnt stabalize, 142's shoot great year around where im at.

Edit to add: If I could do it all over again I would have gone with an 8.5 or 8

Re: 6.5mm twist rate advice 1:8 or 1:8.5"

If you use a 1-8 by default in 6.5 you cant go wrong. It'll stablize 123's to 142's in 6.5 CM/47L to 6.5x284

Re: 6.5mm twist rate advice 1:8 or 1:8.5"

i run 6.5 bore tubes in 1-8", 1-8.5" and 1-9"

8" is my default nowadays. i see no downside

8.5" works almost as well

my 9" twist would stabilize 140 SMKs, but not the 142s

Re: 6.5mm twist rate advice 1:8 or 1:8.5"

My 28" 1:8" works with 142's at 1Kyd, and 95's at 200yd. I try to keep teh lighter weight bullets at shorter distances. the book says they're reach, but they develop increased drop well beyond calculated values at extended distances. I suspect a slower twist might help with that, but until I can save up my pennies for a new barrel, I can't prove it.

Re: 6.5mm twist rate advice 1:8 or 1:8.5"

what bullet do you plan on shooting

Most bullet manufacturers recommend twist rate for given bullets, follow whatever they advise..pert easy

Where do you get 147 and 153 grain 6.5 bullets?

Re: 6.5mm twist rate advice 1:8 or 1:8.5"

Tag. I'm picking up a 1:8.5 for a Creedmoor build. Amazing what the Google search function will do for ya!

Re: 6.5mm twist rate advice 1:8 or 1:8.5"

i have a 24" Benchmark 1-8 twist in 260 rem, it shoots the 142 SMK at 2850 fps and 1250yds is too easy.

Re: 6.5mm twist rate advice 1:8 or 1:8.5"

1 in 8.5" for 6.5x47L as you are more limited in case capacity than 6.5cm or 260rem, and thus will be better off pushing the 120 to 130grs faster.

I'd like to know about those 147 and 153gr bullets for 6.5 as well.

Re: 6.5mm twist rate advice 1:8 or 1:8.5"

My 6.5 CM has a Kreiger barrel with a finished length 28" 8.5 twist, it does a great job with 140gr bullets.

Re: 6.5mm twist rate advice 1:8 or 1:8.5"

I think I'm going to finish at 24" with a Bartlein 1:8.5 twist 5R in Creedmoor. Does this sound like a good build? No idea what size bullet to use since I've only ever shot 7.62mm.

Re: 6.5mm twist rate advice 1:8 or 1:8.5"

I think that 8 or 8.5 is splitting hairs, either way will be fine. Mine is getting built in 8.5 to shoot 139's and 140's
