In a about a month I am going to get my first chance to shoot my 6.5x284 past 700 yards, p-dogs. Probably I will get to shoot in the neighborhood of 1000 to 1600 yards, I hope to get out to a mile

Re: 6.5x284 Shooters

I get to 1000 yards easily, 1400 yards and it gets near transonic (sea level). Higher altitude and it might make a mile.

Re: 6.5x284 Shooters

The 140 Amax and 142 SMK will remain stable through Mach 1 transition at 29.2 inHG 30F

My 6.5-06 would get the 140 Berger to a mile supersonic with a 28" barrel and Retumbo spitting them at 3150fps. If I slowed them down below 3100fps I got very erratic results at 1740yd, the bullet doesn't appear to remain stable through transition.

Depending on how long you 6.5-284 tube is and what the MV's are it will make it to a mile with the Berger, it just takes some pushing. Without risking over pressure or switching to a long barrel with Retumbo or H1000 then the 142 SMK or 140 Amax would be the 2 bullets that I'd suggest, having done it.

I've seen Tom Sarver shoot a 260 to 1650 and 1740 several times using the 142 Sierra and that certainly isn't getting there above Mach 1. You just need a bullet that makes it through the barrier point first or it's going to be extremely frustrating.

Re: 6.5x284 Shooters

I shot both my 260 and my 6.5x284 to 1300yds with no problems. I would "NOT" take a 6.5x284 to a dog town unless you plan on not shooting it very much. You can junk it out in a short time trying to shoot a dog at 1000+yds.

I have seen it done by guys trying to get that hit when they are SOooooo... close and they just keep shooting and pretty soon the barrel is smoking hot and the throat is gone. I have also had my rifle ruined by my son in a tactical match in Wyoming shooting Man on Man competition. He went to the match with a .3 rifle and came home with a .8 rifle. (But he did give me a new barrel for it.) So be careful and don't get stupid and get it hot!!!

Re: 6.5x284 Shooters

Ya, I have thought about the chance of burning up my barrel too. I will have to try to and pace myself. I am taking it just for dogs past 1000 yards.

Re: 6.5x284 Shooters

I am attempting to get into FClass hopefully this summer, if not the following summer. I am looking at 6.5-284, so reading these few posts have made me think positive about a learner rifle for FClass. Thanks guys

Re: 6.5x284 Shooters

I've got a 6.5/284 and it is a screamer but when the barrel is a smoothbore (probably by July) I'll be rebarreling to 284 win and necking up my remaining brass. Ohh the irony!

Re: 6.5x284 Shooters

Took mine out to 1500 yrds. 140 berger, 3050FPS. Made three hits in a row on a steel plate (18 X 18)! Loved that gun, Hated the barrel wear!
