6.5x47 barrel length

I am going to be having a gun built and chambered in 6.5x47 to run 123 Sinclair's. I am wanting to run a 22" tube. Does anyone have any experience with this combination to ease my concerns? I know a longer barrel is going to yield more velocity but I prefer a shorter one. It will mostly be used for 600 yards and less, but I <span style="text-decoration: underline"><span style="font-style: italic"><span style="font-weight: bold">DO NOT </span></span></span>want to limit my self to that. I would ultimately like to some day take some cracks at 1000. If anyone could offer me there experience it would be greatly appreciated.

20" 123 scenar
1k none issue with this combo

I read somewhere that 108scenar is a better bullet thou

mine runs 27-28MOA @ 1k pending temp etc

I have built 2 6.5x47 Lapua's that both run 22 inch barrels. Velocity with the 123 grain scenar was 2770 using RL17. This is an easy sub MOA 1000 yard setup.

My smith has the reamer for the 123's already and I like that bullet so I want to stick with it. I just didnt want to "cut" myself short by going with a 22" barrel....That makes me feel better

I run a 26 inch tube,

I have yet to get more than 870 m/s 123 Scenar and 850 123 A-max, that is 2850 fps and 2788 fps,

yes I will make 1 k but I still would like some more speed.

I decided to go with a 26" for no other reason than I could chop it off and re-chamber a couple of times

my 20" 5C brougton runs pert near 2900fps

Is that a pretty compressed load Jedi?

I get 37 grains RL15 under a 123 scenar and it runs about 2900 and is about full of powder depending on seating depth.

Yep
but it works, bushed firing pin helps

zero pressure signs in tx summer heat, not even a smidgen of ejector wipe

I normally test to locate max load first ie ejector wipe
then work backwards to locate something that shoots to my needs.

Doing this i find i generally run loads most consider hot, never had issues....just my preferred method of loading
Why give up 150fps for lack of experimenting

Mine:

25.3 inch Satern barrel, 123 scenars at 2930 fps using 37.4 grains of RL15.

Or so I am told.

I have two 6.5x47L barrels for Savage builds that should be in my hands in a few days. I opted for 27" tubes. Hopefully I can get the 123's to 2900fps.

Those loads look slow to me....

I have two different rifles finished at 24 each. I run the same load in both ( one Kreiger 8.5 and a Rock 8.5 in the other )

I run 39 Grains of RL15 on Lapua Brass / Magnum small primers ( not particular ) and 120 SMK's or 123 Scenars. Both rifles above 3000 FPS ( one is 3050...ish and the other is 3080 ) in the dead heat of summer here in West Texas, I have had maybe 2 out of the last 400 rounds that even had a hint of ejector printing or sticky / hard bolt lift and that was when the rifle and ammo sat in the truck at 115 degrees most of the day. I will agree they are at the higher end of the limit but still within reason. They are super accuate as well.

I will also say that my chrono is not top of he line but I have not seen any reason to doubt the numbers it has been reporting.

I dont think 22" is out of the realm of possibility to 1K but I push my gear a little harder than some do.........

2778 was the 140 grains SST with 35,6 grains of N150,

the higher speeds was with 123/scenar/A-max 37,5 N150 and fed 205:s, I had to go back and reread the results from my crono.

I have had one pierced primer and I do not intend to do that again, I still have some room according to QL however should I wish to go there I would have to bush the firing pin hole and get a smaller diameter pin,

not a biggie but still yet another expenditure, I belive is the proper word, one I have yet to accept.

The speeds I am getting are ok for me.

Still I wish I could get 2900+ and with N540 powder that should be possible.

Just so ya know
QL info for RE17 is outta whack

generally QL PSI is wrong by about 7k psi, as in QL shows loads with higher pressure than actual

FPS, also is high by about 50fps

info gleamed from testing done on 6br using barrel pressure thingy

Jedi- we don´t get RE17 here,

wish we did, but yes I have sort of figured out that QL is off by a bit here.

I´ll keep on working up my loads a bit but I feel that I need to have that firing pin holed bushed before I get in to deep.

I am not running that hot on the RL15. But it is a little temp sensitive. Over 95F it gets pretty stout and I can see ejector swipe and have a sticky bolt. That is with the 139scenars and 37gr.

Another thing that came to mind after my previous post....

Both of my rifles are Stiller actions and when they were ordered, I opted for the small rifle firing pin. Maybe that has some bearing on the fact that I have not pirced any primers..

Mine is 24". I get 2800fps with 140gr Amax, 42gr of H4350


My mates was 26", and he got 2810fps with the same load, then cut to 22" and still got 2800fps.


I'm cutting mine to 20" for a Roedale suppressor.

Firstly and most important
6.5x47 you have to run correct firing pin or bush standard unit

You cant hope to run full pressure loads that case was designed for without doing this.

i cant speak as to temp issue with RE15 as i have not used it, however RE17 is completely different beast
To date running stiff loads i have had zero issues thru out heat of TX summer

RE17 truly is go to powder for this case, i know several that hit 6.5-284 fps running longer barrel and 140vld
2950-3000fps thou most settle on 2950fps or so, same as most 6.5-284 match rigs run.
I am currently awaiting completion of my new f class rig, 31" broughton 5C, defiance action, MBR stock etc
Fully expect it will have no problems matching 6.5-284 performance, less powder and better barrel life
thou i am seriously thinking about nitride treatment for barrel to improve barrel life further looking for 5k + rounds of match life accuracy.
Process is cheap and reports of 3x barrel life not unusual, so it sounds to good to be true...but for $75 and fact very reputable shooters are reporting huge improvement in barrel life, whats to lose
