6.5x47 tight neck ?

I'm starting to break in a new 6.5x47 and noticed that the bullets wouldn't slide easily back into the fired cases. (This is from factory loaded 123gr and 139gr lapua ammo.) I've read in Glen Zediker's book that this means I have thick neck walls and this can spike pressures. The 123gr lapua ammo shot fine. The 139gr factory ammo produced bad ejector swipes on the brass.

I also have some new brass that I'm pretty happy with. Out of 30 random pieces they all measured between .0121-.0129. So I was thinking of skipping the neck turning all together, and just pulling out the bad pieces. My question is this....Between the pressure signs on factory loaded brass, and the bullet drop test, do you guys think that I should neck turn?

neck o.d. with loaded 139/140gr bullet = .290
neck o.d. after 1st shot = .292
reamer I believe was .293 neck
neck wall thickness = .0121-.0129

Re: 6.5x47 tight neck ?

For me, I try to turn the necks so that I have a .0015 clearance fit(fit neck). This is of course for rifles where you are NOT going to use factory loads. Most every thing I have is set up this way except for my 30-06's as I have a basement full of surplus ammo that I can use if I get desperate or lazy.

I guess that I have a little benchrest shooter in me in that if I miss a target or shoot a bad group it is because I screwed up - not a gun or load problem.

I don't know what you are exactly looking for in terms of accuracy but I believe that neck turning is a worthwhile job.

Re: 6.5x47 tight neck ?

Well to make everything the same i resize and use a inside neck reamer on my brass when i run it through my case trimmer. Yes i have ran bras like this before tight enough that i could replace the primer and reload with out sizing anything and shoot again. Which some guns i have used liked it others not so much.

Maybe a better question would be do I HAVE to neck turn? I was thinking that brass would be flowing. And after about the 5th reload things might be getting kind of tight if I don't turn my necks.
