Guys, getting a black rifle itch again, picked up an LMT MRP in 5.56 and it is a switch barrel. They offer the conversion to 6.8. So, is the 6.8 SPC a good caliber? I'd use it mostly for hoggin' it down here in the weesatch. I know they are almost finished with the .300 whisper, so should I hold out....

Re: 6.8 SPC ?

I have two 6.8 uppers and love them. I have never shot a pig with them but my boss has killed a lot of hogs and deer with his and swear's by the 6.8 using the Barnes bullets.

Re: 6.8 SPC ?

IMO, when you compare the ballistics with all the AR15 calibers using 16" barrels, I think the 6.8 outshines the others in killing performance and accuracy, ecspecially with the specII chamber.

I have killed 8 whitetails so far this year with mine, from 100 to 400 yards using nosler's 110 accubond.

No complaints here.

Re: 6.8 SPC ?

It is an excellent AR15 hunting round and a lot of fun to shoot. I've killed a bunch of hogs with the 6.8, and it made them very dead, very quickly. Dr. Roberts (DOCGKR) did a bunch of gelatin tests and the 6.8, and it proved excellent. If your looking to hunt with your AR15 or want something with substantially more power than the .223 then the 6.8 is the way to go. If not, spend the money on ammo and just stick with the .223.

Re: 6.8 SPC ?

My deer hunting rifles are 6.8mm's (LWRC, Noveske, & AR Performance Upper) and have never failed me with a deer. I uses Barnes 95GR TTSX and Nosler 100GR Accubonds as the rounds for hunting. I reload my own so I use RL10X 28.5 grains and size to 2.250 COAL and fit nicely into PRI magazines. The 6.8mm is a good hunting round for under 300 yards and can kill a little further but I don't try it past that point. If I need a longer round then I go to the 308.

Re: 6.8 SPC ?

I love the 300 WTF (i.e. 300 BLK, Whisper, Fireball, 300/221, etc) for its suppression capabilities. However, the 6.8 is much better in the supersonic realm. If you don’t plan on running a suppressor I would go with the 6.8 hands down. If you want to run heavy projectiles with the least amount of noise, the 300 WTF wins and still allows acceptable supersonic performance in the same rifle.

Re: 6.8 SPC ?

Unless you want to shoot subsonic, the 6.8mm is GTG for most anything you want to do with it as long as your mags work. My only caveat is that for serious long range stuff it lacks something, though I did take 2nd in a local sniper match with my 16" Noveske barreled 6.8 shooting 115 SMKs before I sold the barrel and went with 300 BLK.

At what distances?

Re: 6.8 SPC ?

Congrats on the second place finish, hopefully by continuing to show what this cartridge is capable of we'll overcome the internet rumors of it dropping to the ground at 300yds. I driven the 6.8 to 1K out of a 16" tube (several other 68forum members have as well). Not what the 6.8 is made for or best at, but it will do it as well as any mag fed round from a 5.56. My Noveske 6.8 would shoot one MOA out to 800 with factory Hornady 110BTHP, still supersonic to ~850yds. At 700 I could pop the center door on silhouette targets with relative ease, the 6.8 made it swing the 5.56 did not.

I routinely shoot on ranges allowing for 750 to 1000 yards, mostly using 5.56mm and some M118LR. As for the referenced match, the vast majority of the points were from 400m and in, with just a few shots at 600-700. I got a lot of grief for bringing a relatively short gas gun to a precision match.

Re: 6.8 SPC ?

I am 100% satisfied with my 6.8 especially with 110gr ttsx from ssa. I havent got to kill anyhting but a big ol diamondback rattler. I have only shot factory loads so far and it has done great. Even with a really hot barrel and fast follow up shots and my crap shooting I stil stayed moa at 200yds. I highly recommend it for a smaller light weight hunting rifle.

Re: 6.8 SPC ?

Saturday, 9/24/11, Noveske 6.8 10.5 inch CQB with M4-2000
suppressor, Atlas bipod/rear bag, SSA 115OTM ammo, zero wind,
my best day ever..... 14 out of 15 hits on the upper 1/3 of an IPSC steel target ( i.e. all upper chest, neck, head ) at 700 yards. "Miss" was just over right shoulder. (Need 37 mins to
get there with a 10.5 inch gun!)

Love these guns. Wish I'd discovered them sooner.

With SSA ammo and Cheaper than Dirt there seems little reason
to reload.
