I started shooting midrange matches last year and do like my 6 BR with an 1/8 twist barrel for the 600 yard matches. I have not had a chance to shoot beyond this range and I can see the ballistics are not that great in the 900 + yard range. I would like to hear from some shooters that shoot the 6 Br out to a 1,000+ and would like to know some load suggestions or your frank opinion that this caliber is just not going to get it done at long ranges.

thanks

Re: 6 BR for Tactical Matches

very capable cartridge for tactical matches.
just get out there and try it out.
you got lots of positives with cartridge, like very good barrel life, low recoil, inherently accurate, and great bullet selection, and while it ain't got the velocity a .243Win does it will still do plenty good.
some concerns may be shooting 10+ round strings, are you Top loading? are you running a mag system and if so, can you tweak it to feed reliably? You sure don't want to be jacking with your gun trying to get it to feed when your supposed to be shooting and the time is running out.

Re: 6 BR for Tactical Matches

6 mm BRs are finicky feeders. That would be my concern. The cartridge is also optimized for use at 300 meters, though it does very well out to 600 yds.

Beyond that it starts to lose steam and there are better choices, but just like the 308, it will work if you can.

Re: 6 BR for Tactical Matches

Shot a 6mm Dasher for a year in tac gun. Shot AWESOME. Never had a gun shoot like that one. Took 2nd in the Steel Safari w/it so I would say it's capable. It fed just fine. If the wind is blowing your at a disadvantage to 6.5mms and the 7mms. Great round though.

Re: 6 BR for Tactical Matches

Me and a friend won the Woody's designated marksman match (see link in this forum) with two 6BRX's. The BRX is just an improved 6BR & we are seeing about 50-75fps gain from it with a 105. This was a timed match & we did it shooting single load. It's not that much slower...

Chris's gun is a solid floorplate but I'm running a 700 with bdl mag box. Problem is the 105 bergers are just a tad to long for me to fit (I have the Mike Bryant mag modification). Think for the next one I'm changing over to the 105 amax. It will fit mag legnth & the case feed reliably so at least then I can get 4-5 shots before having to single feed.

The 6BR with the 105 berger (BC-.532) is very capable of 1000 yards. A friend has won several 1k matches at Butner with his... If you have anymore questions give me a shout.

Re: 6 BR for Tactical Matches

Thanks for the feedback. I am feeling a bit more comfortable now with this caliber. Part of my issue is that I have some cervical spinal problems and the 6BR sure is less punishing. That does not mean that I will give up on the 6.5 calibers and the good ol 308, just that some days it is nice to just feel a push instead of a punch.

Re: 6 BR for Tactical Matches

I run an Eliseo R5 rig in 6BR for Tac matches and it performs it's part flawlessly. My accuracy load is 29.5 gr. Varget under a 107 SMK. I shoot out to 1k yards regularly with no problems. The BC is better than a 155, .308 and 29.5 gr. is a light load. Some use 31+ gr.. If you can read the wind you will not be at a disadvantage. It will "get it done."

Interesting...

You have to do any mods to the mag to make it work?

How did you modify the feed lips? I know, very carefully. Did you use a mill? Any helpful suggestions?

Not on a 223 aics.

Open the feed lips to 0.400" with a mil or dremel. Also need to grind inside the mag a bit to enable the round to get to the feed lips once they are opened up. Simple task and much more reliable for me than a 308 aics was with a spacer.

Re: 6 BR for Tactical Matches

I couldn't get mine to feed right.... so it's now a .243Win.. If you can sort the feed problems with the stubbly cartridge I think it would do just fine..
Oh and I had great velocity with 105's and Varget with a 26" barrel.

Re: 6 BR for Tactical Matches

Some good comments. I am leaning to starting with a Savage Long Range Precision Varmint with a 1 - 8" twist. I can only find 1 - 12" twists on places like Gunbroker, and auction arms. Anybody know of one available at around $1,075?

Re: 6 BR for Tactical Matches

I spent Sunday sorting out my difficulties with the 6BR feeding through the 10 rnd. AI .308 mag. I previously tried a shim in the front of the magazine, for this method you have to chop off about 3/8" from the front of the follower and cut or bend that much of the spring. I bent it, which turned out to be a lucky move. The front shim method blows chunks, avoid at all costs. Yesterday I made a shim for the rear of the mag and it feeds dummies perfectly, all 10. I used the altered follower from the front shim method so I bent the spring back to flat and chopped off the rear (about 3/8"). By this time the follower was looking questionable and I was worried I'd effed up a perfectly good $80 magazine. Luckily, the dummies fed beautifully after I massaged the shim to allow the flat spring to expand and contract freely. Now the only thing remaining is to test it with live rounds.

Test completed. Runs like a champ. No defects, no hic-ups...like butter.
I also bought an AICS .223 magazine and opened up the feed lips and the front area where the bullet tips egress from the mag. This is very simple and can and should be done with hand tools (1/2 rnd. fine bastard) as removing too much material will turn it to rubbish. I really like the .223 magazine for 6BR as it is lighter and has a more positive grip. It will only hold 7-6BR rounds and I intend to use it for XTC matches which only require 5 rounds.
