6 digit Rem 700

Could someone please explain the significance of the 6 digit Rem 700 serial number? I see them for sale a lot and the sellers point this out?

So all M40's were six digits? Is this just for historical purposes or are the 6 digit actions better in some way? I assume the action is all that would be used in a build, correct?

All original M40's (not A1's) were six digit short action receivers.

Not all six digit receivers are in the right serial range for a M40 or M40A1.

M40A1's can be six digit or "C" series.

I have a "C" series but it has 7 letters behind it.
