Hello all! I just purchased a Remington 700 SPS tactical .308. Right now I have a Burris Fullfield II 3.5x-10x50 LRS on it. I'd like to get something with a bit better glass and a bit more magnification. Right now I'm looking at the Burris MTAC 4.5-14x42 for $550, the Vortex Viper HS 4-16x50 for $600 and the Nikon M308 4-16x42 for $550. I have a range near me that allows shots out to 800 yards, so I'd like something that will work out that far. I'd appreciate any info you can give me on these scopes or others you'd think would fit my situation/budget. Thank you all in advance!

Re: $600 scope for sps tactical

all good scopes for the money you list there.

My suggestion if you are not in a terrible rush to get a new scope...

hawk the classifieds here on the hide a few times each day, be patient and sure enough something like an SIII, or Ziess, or a slightly better Vortex with a little more magnification will be up for sale for around $600-$700 in great condition...often with rings but rest assure it won't last long and you need to be on it.

I have missed a few really sweet deals on similar optics but i don't need it right now just hate missing a good deal.

EDIT - here is one i just found, not a ton of info on it but just to give you an idea

Re: $600 scope for sps tactical

I would check out LoneWolfUSMC's videos and website. 8541tactical.com He provides a lot of information that you may want to consider before making a purchase (along with upcoming scope reviews). There's a nice review of the Bushnell 6-24x50 and he advocates that here pretty often, though not exclusively. There are a lot more quality options now hitting around that price point than in prior years from what I understand. I have a Weaver 3-15x50 FFP EMDR that I purchased used on here from a reputable member. The transaction was friendly, trouble-free and I got into a quality used optic for much less than new. Good luck!

Re: $600 scope for sps tactical

Looking through the Viper HS's, I thought the reticle itself was really thin. It is not a huge issue unless you're going to be hunting with the rifle as well, then again, that may not be an issue for some either (it is for me). Have you considered the regular model Vipers? The 6.5-20x50 with the mil-dot reticle is an outstanding piece of glass, especially for the cost. Though, at 600.00, I think you are also close to affording a PST in SFP. Couldn't go wrong there.

Can you tell I like Vortex? It must be difficult to see, huh?

Re: $600 scope for sps tactical

OP of the scopes you mentioned Vortex would be a good choice. Although it will be best to wait and get a Vortex PST. Another options are the Weaver Tactical 3-15x50 EMDR FFP.

Whichever you decide, look at the reticle subtension, design, and focal plane. The Weaver EMDR (FFP) has hollow dots and half mil hash marks, the Vortex PST (FFP) has half mil hash marks. Either will be less obscuring to your targets at longer ranges.

The weavers come in at approx $700 and the Viper pst at $899.

You MAY want to look at the MIDWAYUSA exclusive scope from VORTEX.

There is a thread on it as well... and at $500 its probably going ot be the BEST scope under the $1K price range.

Also... VORTEX customer services is TOP NOTCH!
