I'm searching for a scope upgrade, from a Sightron SII Big Sky 4.5-16. Because of my price range Im looking at the Leupold VX-R Patrol 3-9 and the Vortex Viper 2.5-10.

My intended use is for a 700 LTR .308 out to about 500 yards.

I've not been able to find but maybe 1 or 2 reviews on either scope. Right now Im leaning towards the VX-R bc the PST 2.5-10's lack of paralax adj.

Let me know what you know of these two or any other options in that price range.

Concerns:
Are the only upgrades these offer is matching turrent/reticle?
Should the lack of paralax adj. through the pst out?

While not the patrol model, I have the VX-R 3-9 on my coyote AR. I really like the scope. I went with the #4 reticle with the firedot. This is my first Leupold and I'm not disappointed in it one bit about the glass or build quality.

I have both scopes. Neither scope has a parallax adjustment. That knob on the left side of the Leupold is the Fire Dot illumination. The Vortex PST has the illumination on the eye piece.

Other than them both being in the same magnification range it's a little of a apples to oranges comparison IMO.

The turrets of the Vortex are more of a positive tactile feel. The Vortex also has a Shim style zero stop feature. 29 MRADS of adjustment.

The Leupold IMO is better designed for the AR or Semi auto platform. It's very sleek with a low profile design. The knobs are tiny, a little mushy, and rather a pain the in ass to zero the turret out. 18 MRADS of adjustment.
Having said that I love the leupold. I can't really think of another scope I would want on there currently. My SPR has seen plenty of scopes on it from NF to the new SS 5-20.

For a bolt action I think you would be better off with the Vortex. However that's JMO owning both optics. Not to mention that Vortex reticle is a tad thinner than the Leupold.
