Looking to setup a 22 trainer and trying to decide between the Sako Quad and the Anschutz 64MPR. Based on accuracy, performance and dependability what is the consensus of the hide for which one to go with. I know Europtic has a nice package for the Quad but let's judge just on the actions at this time.

Thanks

Re: 64MPR vs Sako Quad

I can't speak on the Anschutz but, my experience with the quad leaves me disappointed with the mags, feeding and extraction. I don't know if it's a mag or chambering problem but, I send alot of bullet noses into the chamber edge when feeding. My barrel was part of the group buy that went on last year. With extraction, you'll find that a stuck case will need to be removed with a cleaning rod. I have also purchase 2 10 round mags that WON'T FEED with more than 7 rounds in them. YMMV

Re: 64MPR vs Sako Quad

I've got 2 quads; while I really like the action and bolt feel and they're accurate the magazines have proven to be the weak spot. Some mags work well loaded to capacity, some work well loaded only to 9 rounds, some don't work well even when loaded with only 7 or 8.

I have a bunch of mags; 6 10 rounders for 17hmr and 7 10 rounders for .22LR. With the 7 .22LR mags 5 of them work great even when loaded to 10. 1 of them won't feed the 10th round correctly but works fine loaded with 9. 1 won't reliably feed if I load any more than 8 or sometimes even only 7. On the problem mags the cases start sitting too flat once you load a certain number of rounds and then the bullet noses hit the bottom edge of the chamber when you try to chamber a around.

I'm trying to track down a stronger follower spring thinking that might help the problem and hold the noses of the rounds up a little higher when the magazine is loaded to capacity. I haven't tweaked/shaped/polished feed lips yet as they're expensive little buggers if you screw up. I'm also thinking of trying to increase the ramp angle on the problem mags possibly by heating & reshaping the follower.

All my .17 HMR mags work fine as the bullets are nice and pointy; even if they're held a little flatter when the mag is loaded to capacity the pointed nose still finds the chamber. Not so with the blunt/round noses on .22LR; it catches the bottom of the chamber leaving a gouge in the bullet and tweaking the bullet in the case.

I have heard of people lightly radiusing/ramping the bottom of the chamber to help with problem mags but then you leave a portion of the case unsupported and the risk of a case rupture increases.

Re: 64MPR vs Sako Quad

Whats your idea of a "Trainer"?

Some folks consider that to be an exact or as close as possible clone of their LR rigs. In that case you will not find an exact replica stock for the Anschutz.

McM makes an M40 style stock for the CZ 452/455 and manners makes a A5 (MCT-T4) for the Sako and CZ these are both made in composite materials. For Wood stocks theres the Boyds Tacticool for several actions but as far as I know not available for Sako or Anschutz.

Now if your idea of a trainner is a rimfire to hone shooting skills witout concern of exact ergos and control layout (mag release safety etc) then I feel either rifles mentioned would serve you well but I appreciate the out the box features of the Anschutz more. The 64 have a stock that has a shape that is versitile to a number of positions as well as an accessory rail which I like for slung up prone shooting and the barrel is grooved up front for Anschutz globe sights and the receiver is grooved for rear sights as well as drilled an tapped for scope base.

So for direct clone go with the Sako (or CZ I'll adress that in a bit), for overall versitility as a multi application rifle (if 3P or small bore is something you may be interested in) the Annie has more going for it.

OK since I am a fanboy I have to throw out the CZ 455 as an option as well. While I make no claim that bone stock it will run alongside rifles of almost doubble the cost with a few user installed upgrades I beleive they will. Honestly you are not going to save any money compared to the 64 in fact you will easily go over the cost but you will be into it less than a fully tricked out Sako.

Its a matter of what floats your boat, if you want a turnkey rifle without having to build it and tweak it then the CZ may not be a viable option. If you like to play with Legos I would suggest taking a look at it.

Re: 64MPR vs Sako Quad

My annie will hold a 1/2 moa at a 100 if the wind is right. I have no idea how the Sako is, but I dont think they make a better rimfire trigger then the annie. I also have a $400 Savage 17 HMR that hold 1/2 moa. If price matters check out the savage.

Re: 64MPR vs Sako Quad

mcmillan makes the anschutz silhouette stock for the 54/64. The grip and cheek rest reminded me of the A2. I had one on a single shot 64 match a few years ago and it was a great stock and was similar to my 308.

I agree with Anchor Zero Six, if you want an exact replica stock, go with the sako or cz, although I prefer the anschutz over both.

Re: 64MPR vs Sako Quad

I have both of them. Anschutz trigger is better. They both shoot very well with right ammo. Very well means you can cover 5 shot group at 50m with your fingertip.

Quad synthetic hevy barrel is almost identical to Tikka T3 tactical model, same trigger group also.
