I'm completely new with the whole idea of long range shooting and had a question about this. I'm thinking of buying a savage model 110 desert tactical in 6.5 creedmoor as my first decent long range rifle. now it comes with a 20 moa rail and I was trying to find out if my scope with 65 moa of adjustment was gonna be able to be zeroed at 100 yards for hunting and still be able to reach out to 7-800 yards, thanks.

30 moa would be the max I would try with that internal adjustment but 20 moa should be plenty for your goals. I do know two people that did 40 moa rails with vortex hst scopes and got it to zero at 100 but I don't recommend it.

For future reference, let’s use 1k yds. Quick non precise inputs on calculator at 1k DA says you need 29moa for factory 140 eldm.

Your optic has 65 moa and in a perfect world, your zero would be in the center or 32.5 moa. Leaving you with 32.5 moa of adjustment left.

Add your 20moa base and you have 52.5 moa adjustment. Plenty for your intended 29moa or
So you’ll need.

Now let’s say you were thinking about not adding any moa in the base:

You will likely need 29moa and theoretically will have 32.5moa of adjustment. That’s too close to comfortably say it will work.
