Does anyone have any experience with the 6mm/6.5mm variants in a bolt gun? I have been considering building a 6mm or 6.5 mm variant in bolt gun. Something that shoots around 3000FPS with the heavier match bullet for it's size. I don't want it to be too radical. Something I can buy Lapua/Win brass for and simply resize, trim--> Then ready to load. I have a .308 now, so it will have some respectable differences to justify. Thanks

yeah plenty of people shoot the 6.5 creedmoor, 6.5x47, 6x47 there is a thread that should be on the first page of threads that is titled something like "Why i love the 6.5 creedmoor" all those guys have experience with them might check out that thread

I'm into the .260, too. Savage action, LW barrel. It won't do 3000 with the 140 range bullets, but you really don't want to do that if you want any barrel life. The only way to get that kind of speed in the 6.5 is the 6.5x284 and barrel life is VERY short. The .243 with 107-115s is another option, but presents the same problems: peak accuracy is about 1500 rounds, then it starts falling off. I know that .260 at 2800 will get twice that, easy.

I have both. Love the shit out of them like they were my little metal and plastic children...

Once I build a 7WSM I'll have everything I want.

I dont think there is a bad 6mm or 6.5mm chambering. Well maybe a 264 win mag. They are pretty tough on barrels. Go 243 and buy some lapua brass and berger bullets, federal match LR primers and go to work!!! Lee

Re: 6mm/6.5mm Bolt Guns?

I would go for Standard 6,5x55 if you can get Norma or Lapua ammunition for it.
I have a hard time to see anything really positive with the other rounds instead of the orignal.
Here in Sweden we buy the matchammo really cheap for the 6,5x55 and with that the ballistics is great.

Heavy grain (140-142 gr SMK) at 3000 FPS is 6.5-284 or 6.5-06 territory. Both should be on a long action unless single loaded. 6.5X55 requires modification of your bold face. .264 WM also requires a different (Mag) bolt face.

As state above at 3000 barrel life is really a consideration if you shoot F-class or extended range sessions. I pulled my 6.5-06 barrel at <1300 rounds.

I have a Border 6.5 barrel and am thinking about the Creedmore on a short action. YMMV

Good luck

Re: 6mm/6.5mm Bolt Guns?

I shoot a 260 with a 31" Palma barrel, light loads give me 2800 with a 140 but I can shoot hundreds per day at 6" targets, 750 yds and feel great at the end of the day. It a tame popgun which anyone can shoot! And easy on the barrel too.
I've got over 3800 fps with a 95 gr bullet but it proved to be a cold weather only load!
Am now building a 6.5x47, many excellent options are available for these two calibers.

+1 on the 260 remington, but it would be tough to go too wrong with any of the 6 & 6.5's. I have had a similar experience as Explorer and Aos with my 260, getting a little over 2800fps with 142gr SMK's on top of 46.7gr H4831 out of a 26" Krieger.

Re: 6mm/6.5mm Bolt Guns?

Go with the 260 Rem. Brass is easy to find and it will get the job done. Even the cheaper Remington brass gives decent groups. I like the 140 grain loads. Not quite up to 3000fps, but as others have mentioned, it is a tame round and can be shot all day with out really noticing it.
