6mm Berger Hybrid

Re: 6mm Berger Hybrid

They look nice, and the BC will be better than average. I have not tried them so far, and depending upon the price probably never will. Nothing bad for Berger, but I'm sitting on nearly 2K DTACs, and still have nearly 400 of the 108BTs in the garage. For my 6x47L, that is more than a few years of shooting (since my 7WSM remains my go to rifle for nearly everything).

Re: 6mm Berger Hybrid

I got a box to test from Berger.....

They are longer than either the 105VLD or the 108BT. The bearing surface is nearly identical in length to the VLD. They do have a higher G1 and G7 BC which I haven't confirmed yet at 600 yards.
The meplats are very small and even - I don't think trimming/pointing would give any benefit, they are TIGHT. At 100 and 200 yards, they shoot as well as the VLDs in the 6mm (6ARturbo40º) I was using.

But.............
They didn't seem to like to be jumped, at least the groups said they didn't. Granted, the growth wasn't huge but I think the reason they wanted to bring them out was to meet the needs of mag-length loading.

5-shot groups at 100yds
29.50gr Varget
At lands: .355"
.020 off lands: .431"
.040 off lands .535"
30.00 Varget
At lands: 451"
.020 off lands .556"
.040 off lands .893"

For me, the VLDs work best seated barely in/just at the lands. An OAL of roughly 2.328" (average since I don't use tip to base OAL, only to Ojive) puts the VLDs kissing the lands. Groups are regularly .3s and .4s.

I'd say with a little fine tuning the Hybrids could outgroup the VLDs and have better 600yd+ performance with their higher BC.

Re: 6mm Berger Hybrid

Thanks for the update. Keep us informed.

With my 6x47L, my BTs are jumping fools, as are my 115 DTACs. I had a box of 105 vlds, but never opened them because the 108s and 115 DTACs worked so well for me.

Re: 6mm Berger Hybrid

With the Hybrid having a higher BC than either the DTACs or the 115g Berger VLDs and being able to push them faster, the long range ballistics make more sense to shoot the Hybrids.

Killshot, your results are interesting. You have been the first person that I have read that has any problem jumping these bullets. (I jump the 7mm Hybrids without any problem). Thanks for posting those results.

Re: 6mm Berger Hybrid

I tested the same bullets for berger in my 243 AI with a 1-7.5 twist, they shot best at .50 off the lands, I got several groups just under 1/2 MOA at 600 yds and most other 5 shot group at around 1/2 MOA. conditions were perfect with no wind at all though. I am switching to those.
I was pushing them fast too.

Re: 6mm Berger Hybrid

The hybrids don't have a higher BC than the Dtacs. Most of us that are using the Dtacs use a .585 BC to match drop. I have shot them out to 1600yds and that BC matches up spot on. The Berger 105 hunting jacket bullets are still a .532 BC with is just slightly lower than the .547 Hybrid BC. I would use it over the Berger 115 for sure. The Dtac and the 105 VLD are still my goto bullets.

The handfull I got shot best on the lands and was closer to matching the drop of the 105 VLD. .25 MOA difference at the most out to 1200yds.

Re: 6mm Berger Hybrid

I'm using 0.590 G1 BC for the DTACs and it tracks out to 1100 yards.

The question is: how much higher will the BC be on the hybrids if pointed?

From the 100 I examined, They were as tightly and evenly tipped as any I've seen come out of a fellow shooter's Tipping/Pointing system. Can't imagine any measurable gain.

I am going to jump the rest of the testers at -.060, -.080 and -.100. Maybe I wasn't jumping enough?
