I can't wait for Jon to chamber my stick. Kevins 6 shoots lights out! I watched as he posted some
pretty amazing groups Sunday working up a load for a upcoming match on the 11th.
Maybe he will get sick or something.:D

Hi Kevin,

Is it a another rifle or was your barrel worn and replaced? If replaced, how many rounds through it before accuracy fell?

I just got a 2cnd barrel made up for my rifle (edit "2cnd barrel for this year", actually the 5th barrel on this action). A new Benchmark Rem varmint contour with 8 twist at 27.5" barrel in 6x47L, same reamer as before. I tried 50 rounds of a reduced 115 DTAC/H-4831 load (40.8 gr/low node) left over from the melonited barrel that gave up the ghost to use for barrel breakin and some long range shooting. It shot just as good in the new barrel, maybe better. I'm hoping my current 105 hybrid load does the same. I'll come back in a couple weeks to say whether it did or not.

Do you know if Beanland used the same reamer as the last one in your new barrel? Did you stay with the 34.8 gr of Varget on your last 27" barrel?

Hey Steve,

2nd barreled action. Like everything about this caliber, wanted to have a 2nd barreled action ready to go.

Have 2100rds on current barrel. Velocity has been dropping off in the last few hundred rounds, still shooting well. Guessing the barrel is going to die any shot? Stayed with the Varget load. Adding more powder to maintain velocity, at 35.8 now. Have a Kreiger 8 twist Medium Palma on the way for Jon to re-barrel when it dies.

Same reamer.

See you at Raton match this year.

I've been doing some testing with my 6x47L with hybrids, is everyone jumping them? Ive only tested 10thou jam and 15 thou jump but nothing stellar from it. Do I need to goto 20thou or even 40thou?

I'm seeing some very interesting results playing with seating depth with 105 hybrids and 105 a-max's in my new 6x47L. First loads I made for the new build, I was jumping the Bergers .050 and shot some very tight groups doing barrel break in. Ran ladder tests and settled on 40.5gr of H4350 going 3065fps out of a 1:8, 28" Bartlien. Loaded some more rounds with different seating depths and got some interesting results.

Shooting five shot groups at 200yds, consistent 2-4mph wind, shooting most shots when the flags dropped. All brass (6.5x47L) full length sized, necks turned, then once fired, and ran through a full length Forester die, bumping the shoulder 0.0015. Powder charge of 40.5gr H4350, CCI-450 primers. Results:

.002 off the lands- groups where ~1" vertical, 1.25" horizontal (looked like wind was stringing the group).
.010 off the lands- groups where ~1" vertical, 1.8" horizonatal (stringing left and right)
.020 off the lands- groups where ~0.75" vertical, 2" inches horizontal.

Original load (same wind conditions, same timeframe, same range session)
.050 off the lands- .5" group vertically and horizontally! This has been repeated in even a 5mph wind at 200yds.

Next need to test .030 and .040 to see if it tightens up or shows some sort of trend. The 105g A-max's were showing very similar results when I varied the seating depths. I've read that seating depth might be displayed in horizontal stringing of shots, but most chalk that up to shooting form and wind. Any thoughts? Anyone else had similar results with any cartridge?

Good to know Kevin.

2100...That's pretty decent barrel life for a 6mm.

Next month I'll start trying my new 6.5SAUM barrel on the Surgeon XL for our AZPRC matches. So between the 6.5SAUM and the 6x47L/2 barrels sharing duties I'll have 3 years or so before I have to do another barrel. Unless of course I like that 6.5SAUM enough to do a light barrel. Fun fun.

Hopefully we'll get out there in the spring. The SRM is one of my favorite matches!

Thanks for the info.

I haven't even measured the jump I'm doing with the 105 hybrids but it's a lot, like .080" or so. This is because my reamer was made exclusively for 115's. When doing a ladder test on a new barrel at 400Y with a Swagged seating depth I got 5 shots into .9" and said to myself - I'm leaving that depth just the way it is!

The 230 hybrids also have a huge jump in my 30-375R because that rifle was throated for 240 SMK's. Those bullets shoot crazy good in that rifle too.

Fantastic bullets!

once i burn my 243ai barrel up i am going to turn it into a 6x47

Zac, I would argue that a 243AI will get better barrel life then a 6x47L. Less pressure for same MV. With correct powder choice, you can get good results with both. I run my 6x47L at 243AI speeds without much pressure but more then my mates 243AI.

Had another 6x47 chambered by Jon Beanland. Finalized the load this week.

24" Kreiger 8 twist

34.8 Varget/105 Hybrids/.050 jump/3020fps

My new 6x47L barrel is currently running 38.5(going to bump to 39gr) H4350, 105gr hybrid at 3120fps, 50 thou jump.

Why did you choose Varget KevinU?[/QUOTE

Did a ladder with H4350, H4831SC and Varget on my other 6x47, 26" barrel. Varget shot the best. Didn't try any other powder with the 24" barrel, it shot so well from the start.

What's your barrel length?

I forgot to come back and say whether the same load I worked up for the 30" heavy barrel shot well in the 27.5". It did, thank goodness! One ragged hole at 100Y for 10 shots, maybe 1/2" if that.

Kevin, I run a 28" Kreiger and a 30" trueflite. Both F-Class barrels. Both barrels are getting rechambered to a 6x47L Imp after June and I'm taking the Trueflite to the nationals then it will get a birthday :)

I've read through this thread and found some useful information. I'm having a 6x47 built and should be ready soon. It will be a BAT action, 1:8 28" kreiger with tuned brake, .267 chamber. I have h4350, RL 17 and 15, and h4831 powders on hand. About to get started on the ammo for it. I'll be trying 107 SMK and 108 bergers. It seems like for the h4350 I should hang out around 38.5-40.5gr. I haven't seen much for the RL17 or h4831. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Get some RL19. I havent used H4831 but it would probs be too slow for it.

H-1000 is definitely too slow for 6x47L. H-4831 works great for it with 105's and 115's in longer barrels/26"+. My current load is 105hybrid, 43.1 grains, CCI450 going 3150 out of a 30" 8 twist. I've shot my highest scores with this load and did plenty of winning with lighter charges in the previous barrels. If I had a short barrel I'd be running H-4350 or Varget personally.

Does anybody have some load data for the 105 Hybrid or 107SMK using Varget? I sifted through the thread and didn't see a whole lot. Maybe 36-37g?

24" Kreiger 8 twist

34.8 Varget/105 Hybrids/.050 jump/3020fps

This is couple posts above.

My 6x47 also really liked varget. my load was 36 even - 105's going 2920 out of a 22" barrel. shot lights out. with a 24" barrel on different barrel also similar vol as Kevin - 3010 with 35.5

Id start at 34 and work up from there.
