I recently obtained an Armalite lower with folding Choate stock. The guy thought he could mate it with a DPMS upper and found that since they're proprietary, that wasn't going to work....so I got it for a good price.

I'm looking for an upper to mate it with. Obviously Armalite will work but I want to consider all options. I'm looking for a carbine length with good accuracy and reliability.....(I guess that goes without saying). What's good and what's available?

Any piston-drivens that will work on an Armalite?

As always...thanks!

Re: 7.62/308 AR upper receiver suggestions

AFAIK, only Armalite and Iron Ridge Arms for now. The new Sig 716 looks like it will work and it's a piston driven also, but they aren't out yet.

Just out of curiosity, why did the lower have a folder on it?

Re: 7.62/308 AR upper receiver suggestions

Wihtout having a custom build done...Armalite (complete/stripped), Eagle Arms (complete/stripped), Iron Ridge (stripped for now...complete may be coming) all make uppers.

No piston upgrades/add-ons for the AR-10 platform yet...several companies are working on them or at least saying that they are working on them.

As for the stock...do you mean a "collapsible" stock??? Folding=stock bends 180 degrees to one side of the receiver...collapsible=stock extends/retracts back and forth on a collapsible stock buffer tube. Choate never made a folding stock for an AR-type rifle. They made some for various other rifles like the mini-14, sks, etc....but never an AR to my knowledge. If you did mean "folding"...please put up a pic or two because this I have GOT to see!! The only thing that might have been funnier would be the look on the poor bastard's face (or lack thereof) had he actually attempted to fire an AR-type rifle in that condition.

POF is based on the DPMS platform.

Darn...and I was hoping for a good laugh!!! Oh well...

Just make sure it is an AR-10/LR-308 carbine buffer/spring and NOT an AR-15 version. The 308 carbine buffer should be 5.4oz and approx. 3 1/4" in length. The AR-15 carbine buffer (stnd) will only be about 3oz and 3 1/8" in total length.

Good to know, thanks! I was wondering about that but wasn't sure about the specs on the buffer it came with. I was prepared to have to get another one. I'll check it out today.

Re: 7.62/308 AR upper receiver suggestions

What about just getting an Armalite upper receiver with BCG and CH and having a custom barrel and handguard installed? Anyone have experience with this or can recommend who to send it to for this kind of project? After-market piston kit???

I was thinking something like a Kreiger or Bertlein barrel. Is the price/quality of these barrels worth getting it in 16" or would I just be spending a lot of money for a good barrel cut down to size so it can't perform.

Re: 7.62/308 AR upper receiver suggestions

Pretty much what I have right now. I bought an Eagle Arms complete lower w/o buttstock. I added a MOE and PRS, then bought an Armalite upper and BCG. I just added a PRI Gas Buster charging handle and a Badger handguard. Now
all I have left to do is acquire the barrel to connect the POF Brake to the upper.

I am waiting on Noveske's next run of 7.62 barrels, but GAP, Krieger, etc. can make you an AR10 barrel. If you want a 16" Noveske, Rainier Arms shows them in stock. I just don't know if I want to go that short on a precision rig.

Re: 7.62/308 AR upper receiver suggestions

i am leaning towards a 16"-18" barrel on my DPMS with a rifle length free float tube and brake of some sort. i just like the dissapator style and for me this wont really be a precision rifle. thats what my bolt is for. thanks for the barrel tips LW

I would skip the piston talk

The armalite 308 is a fun rifle but a low volume rifle

not that many built for an aftermarket company to engineer an entirely new gas system to replace the original design.

I have a bias as the ar15 piston guns are the ones that break in classes.

the original AR design works well until you get into SBR territory and then the bolt porpoises

Armalite also uses a mag based upon the m14 mag

I don’t believe dpms pattern magazines will work.
