bought a SVD Dragunov Russian yesterday from a gun show, it came with a 440 tuna can box of ammo, lot y27-80-27. is this reloadable ammo or should i sell it?

All spam can ammo I have seen has been Berdan primer'd and corrosive. Going rate for ammo is about 70-$100. The only one I would keep is if it was Yugo M30, that was the best surplus ammo, made in the 70's comes in a can/crate like this one.

Shoot it. Yes, it can be reloaded but the primers are a pain. There was a large shipment to the US of those primers a few years ago. They were all sold within 12 hrs.

Do you have a pic of the tin/ammo? It's most likely steel cased and Berdan primed. While you can get Berdan primers, it's not an easy task to reload them, as has been mentioned. However, if the ammo is steel cased, I wouldn't reload it, no matter what. Not saying it can't be done, but given the tendency for some eastern bloc milsurp to crack even on the first firing, I wouldn't press my luck.
If it's 7N1 ammo (sniper), it would be worth a lot of money and is possibly more accurate in your SVD than any other surplus would be.

Of the 800 rounds i've put through my mosin, I've never seen any milsurp casings crack.
Contrary to popular belief, 54r surplus ammo is actually quite good (as well as 5.45x39 surplus). As far as quality control goes, on average the ammo is pretty mediocre, reaching consistency and quality of mid grade .308 ammo and sometimes better depending on the type. Most surplus bullets are steel cored. You cannot buy steel core bullets anywhere on the market, so be appreciative of the capabilities of these bullets.
The idea of crappy surplus comes in because all other surplus is typically way crappy, more specifically older american surplus. In addition, the majority of the guns russian surplus is fired through had some of the worst quality control known to firearms. The difference between the best match grade & surplus ammo in your PSL i promise will be less than 1 moa. Unless the surplus ammo is 7n1, which was specifically designed for the dragnov & will pull 1moa or better, even in field conditions.

Having shot 500 times that much thru bolts, belts, an mag fed Russian stuff, I'd suggest shooting more and re-visting this thread with your up date.
FYI, I started shooting Russian when 54R was 3.5 cents per an 39 was just at 3.0 per

yea i have herd about the surplus having crappy stick powder. well i will just shoot it out of my mosin then and get better brass accepting common primers. that way i know its reliable.

He did it more to see if could be done and he did OK with it, but said it was extra work.
I shoot steel cased in my Mosins, but screw trying to reload it - just too much work.

Another problem reloading Berdan is finding the correct primers. I tried to reload for my K31 swiss. Great bress the swiss but there are many more types of Berdan primers than for boxer. I could never find the correct type that had a cup that was the correct length. I think you'll just drive yourself crasy trying to load Berdan. Buy some US made brass from Rem or WRA and you'll be much better off.

In CA we are not allowed to use steel jacketed bullets in most ranges (fire hazard) Last month I purchased a 1978 spam can. I removed the bullets, resized the case and reloaded the ammunition with 150 Gr commercial (.308) bullets I had in the bench
Some forums recommend .310 bullets; Hodgdon's data is based on .308, Lee's dies also recommend .308 therefore I didn't bother buying bullets
At the range my best accuracy was with reloaded PRVI ammunition (Varget), followed by PRVI factory and close 3rd was my "Mexican Match"
Is it worth it? I enjoy reloading, the MN is minute of plate at 100 yards at best and the cost is lower than commercial ammo
