I just picked up a romanian ak with the side mounted russian scope. It is trying to shoot a group at least by AK standards. Does anyone have a pet load that might bring a little more consistancy over the cheap ammo I have. I had some soft point ammo that shot OK from an SKS and it shot 3 into 2" at 100 yds but the next 2 opened things up to over 5". Not trying to make an f-class rifle but make this one minute of coke can.

Re: 7.62x39 load

I have a couple that I use for a standard blasting round.

Win 123 Grn SP or FMJ.
30 gns of h335
CCI 200 or CCI#34 primer

Win 123 FMJ or SP
25 gns of h4198
CCI 200 or CCI#34 primer

Hope that helps.

Re: 7.62x39 load

Definitely go with the win cases. The rem. brass is so thin in the necks I couldn't
get it to crimp on a .310 bullet. Talked to a few people and they just chuckled and
said "use win brass".

Re: 7.62x39 load

Anyone have experience with the IMI bulk brass? I have picked up some, but won't be able to load it for a while.

Neck thickness issues?
How does it hold up?

Oh...and so this isn't a total thread hijack, my plinking load for 7.62 x 39 in an AR platform is 24.9 of RE7 with 123g Midway bulk FMJ (.310) good for ~ 2050 fps and "good" accuracy...about 1-1.5 MOA at 100.

Re: 7.62x39 load

Lapua makes 7.62X39 brass with a K-P base stamp (Kaltron-Petibone, their American partner). I don't have loads for it, but Ramshot X-Terminator should be a relatively OK ball powder, with a burn rate somewhere between IMR-4198 and IMR-4895. If you're shooting a US made bore, it may mic out to .308" instead of .311-.312". If so, .308" diameter bullets could be a better choice, and Sierrra's 110gr HP could be a tack driver in this chambering.

The 7.62X39's bane is its heavy bullet to charge weight ratio, and the 110 weight bullet could zip it up to somewhat better performance. Also, it could make oneheckuva hunting/self protection load.

Re: 7.62x39 load

Its an AK so the bore is not a 308. I have thought several times about a bolt gun with a .308 barrel would be nice for cast bullets and short range hunting but other things fit the bill already and I did'nt have the money. I will look into the ramshot X-terminator. Thanks
