7 PRC Hunting Build - Components Check

Morning everyone,

Putting together a theoretical 7PRC all around LR hunting build with the following components and would like your feedback:

Kelbly Prometheus (Long Action)
26" Preferred Barrel Blanks Medium Palma with heavy fluting (approx. 3.9 lbs)
TT Rough Diamond Trigger
McMillan ELR Hunter (Adjustable)
Hawkins Hunter Bottom Metal DBM
Hawkins Hunter Flush Long Magazines
Not sure on muzzle device - either MPA 30 cal brake or suppressor depending on what is available.
Precision Rings - Hawkins or A419
Scope - New 4x24 Razor or the Delta 3.5-21 or the T6XI 3-18

Use case would be for all North American game up to elk in AZ, CO, & WY.

Let me know what you would change or swap out.

Barrel seems long and a bit heavy for hunting use, especially if you plan to use a suppressor. Truck hunting it would be fine, but any decent amount of hiking and it could start to feel heavy in the hand. A sling or pack will help a lot with carrying it over distance. I originally built a 15.3 pound 7PRC for hunting and ended up making it a light weight dedicated hunting rifle by moving to; lighter stock, lighters scope, lighter rings, switched to titanium suppressor and switched to carbon fiber barrel. Later I used my old parts to put together another heavier target rig, both are built with Kelbly actions. 7PRC is great on elk with a well placed shot. I took a nice bull with mine last year at 200 yards using Berger 168 VLDH. He took about 5 steps and that was it. Good luck with the build.

Mine is set up somewhat similar
Kelbly Nanook
Bartlein 24” #13 CFW 8 twist
Manners PH
Hawkins Hunter M5 DBM and magazine
TT special
TBAC Magnus - or Dominus if I want lighter

I went with the 24” for open country hunting, also had the builder spin me up a 20” if I want to swap and go shorter.

I built one last year for deer hunting. My dad ended up liking it so I built another this year. I like the shorter barrel and was getting 2950fps with federal premium that was loaded with the 175 eldx. It looks like federal stopped production of it though. I got about 2830fps with the hornady factory 175eldx loads.

First one was
Kelbly atlas lite
Pure Precision CF stock and their bottom metal
Triggertech special
Proof 22" barrel
A419 2 port hellfire when I dont have a nomad tiXC on it.
Athlon ares 3-18

The one this year is
Kelbly nanook
Manners night stalker
Mdt hunter bottom metal
Proof 22" barrel
Triggertech special
A419 3 port hellfire when I'm not going to run a suppressor.
Nightforce nx8 2.5-20 (mounted it today and zeroing next weekend)

I set out to do the same type of build for the same purposes you did…will be used next summer for an Alaska bear hunt.

Build specs:
Tikka T3X Stainless .300WM donor rifle.
Proof Tikka-Prefit, Sendero, 7 PRC at 24”.
McMillan Mountain Trakker LR, bedded to action.
Atlasworx AICS Bottom metal.
ODG Duracoat on action, DBM, & Barrel.
Running my Gemtech Dagger .300 on it…
Scope and rings are there for now till I figure out what I want for glass, Few other bits and pieces that are not important but that’s the gist.

Getting good velocity from Federal 175 Tipped Fusion…there is not much out on these but they are 1.496” in length, .294 G7/.575 G1. Getting ~.8groups at 100 yards so this load should do the trick.

Barnes 160 LRX are moving along at 3085.

Not at all at the custom level like you are planning but it’s showing promise…
