Hi, I'm in the middle of building my 7saum and need to decide how long I want my barrel to be. Its gonna be a 1-9 twist shillen select 28 inches for sure but im kinda thinking of going 30. I'm pretty sure im going with the #7 H varmint but I might go with the Standard Varmint if I go 30 finished. I'm planning on running the 168 bergers and will proubly order a custom reamer just for the bergers. Its going in an McM A-4 and will have NF 5.5-22x56 glass on it with steel rings and base so it gonna be a tank. I just wanted to hear from you guys runnins Saums what you think. I would of gone with a differnt barrel but my gunsmith buddy in school gets shillens 40% off and in half the time.

Thanks for you time and feedback.

Re: 7 saum Build

I'm running a Pac-Nor at 24" on my 7 SAUM. Shilen's are fine barrels - shouldn't have any problem with them.

I'd go long at first with a 28" barrel as you can ALWAYS cut it shorter if you want to.

Re: 7 saum Build

why in heck to you want a barrel so long? I am assuming it will be used only prone? if not i wouln't go any longer than 26 especially in your chosen contour. if this for f class go 30 you might as well, just make sure you stay under the weight limit.

Re: 7 saum Build

you never did say what the rifle is going to be used for. if it's shooting rock chucks at 1000 yards, you'll do fine. If it's for a run and gun tactical match with stages that include shooting standing off hand, you better be one heck of a strong brute.

Hell, just shoulder that beast in the off hand standing position, no slings or shooting jacket, and see if you can hit a 2 MOA target at 100 yards. If so, how many times can you hit that target in 5 minutes, given the max of 10 rounds, standing, no sling or jacket?

Just asking cause that was a challenge that I saw at the last "match practice".

if you're crawling through the woods, have fun keeping that beast from hitting everything in site!

Re: 7 saum Build

This rifle is my new work gun that will be used for both hunting varmints long range and shooting steel when I have the time. all my rifles have slings and bipods. As for the weight, pretty much all my rifles weight over 13lbs so im use to hauling an axle tube around. The main reason I wanted to run a 30 inch tube is to push the 180 vlds at 3000fps. I orderd my shillen this morning so in 4-5 weeks It will be here. Has anybody used the Alpha Wsm mags yet? I ordered 2 7 rounders yesterday to try out.

Re: 7 saum Build

I have a 7 SAUM built on a Rem 700 action, and a Shilen barrel cut at about 25". That 30" tube might be cool at first but like an overweight girlfriend, it will start to get on your nerves if you play with it a lot, especially a #7 contour. I think you could start at 26" and be fine.

you shouldn't have any issue getting to 3000 with a 26" tube.
