I want to load soft point ammo for my 223 AR. I have been looking at some 70 grain bullets. Would this be too heavy for a 16" SS barrel with a 1/9 twist? If so, what would the max weight SP bullet for this gun be? Anyone have personal experiences?
My best advice is to go shoot it and see. My 1 in 9" twist savage will stabilize the Hornady 75gr bthp, but a buddies AR with the same twist won't throw them into anything resembling a group.
I had a 16.5 with 1-9 twist and things started to spread anyhing past 69 gr. Groups were running 1 3/4 to 2 inch at 100 yards. When i went down to 55s groups went to 3/4 to close to 1/2 inch at a hundered. Have a good one
My savage PC .223 with a 1-9 will shoot 77smk very well, it is actually the best load in this rifle. It will not shoot barnes tsx 70gr bullets at all, they key hole they are too long.
I shot a white tail in the head from a distance of 80 yards. The 70gr Speers worked fine. Not sure I'd trust it for broadside shots though. Don't remember my exact load but, I do know it was Reloader 15.
