I sent my Rem .308 bolt to Kampfeld Customs last Thursday. Today, only 4 days later, I had my bolt back to me!! I was pumped. They charged $55 for the bolt knob install (I sent my Badger knob in with the bolt) and $75 for the fluting. Here are the pics:

I Duracoated my scope caps and pod claw attachments too. I'm not sure if I'm going to Duracoat my bolt or not..what do you think??

Some bolts that are fluted will ratchet on the brass or scrape the brass as the bolt is pulled to the rear. Ratcheting is usually the case with straight flutes. Just put three rounds in your magazine and work the bolt. See if it ratchets while you lift and close the bolt. Work the bolt front to rear and see if it scratches the brass more than normal.

Karls a great guy and he does quality work.

Gotcha. I never thought of that, hopefully it's not too big of an issue. thanks!

Yea I'm liking the look as it is now. I'm going to clear coat it with some Duracoat Self Lubricating clear. That should prevent it from rusting at all.

Re: 700 Bolt Fluted & Knob Installed!!! (PICS!!)

I like the way it looks now. If you decide to duracoat it later, maybe OD in the flutes only.

Re: 700 Bolt Fluted & Knob Installed!!! (PICS!!)

Beautiful gun. What are the specs?

If it were me, I would probably paint it black, just to make it match. However, it looks gorgeous the way it is.

Re: 700 Bolt Fluted & Knob Installed!!! (PICS!!)

Looks terrific.
I'd try the OD in the flutes, a great idea, Dark Side.
If it turns out you don't like it, black is easy enough.

Remington 700 SPS .308
AI Chassis Stock
Nightforce NXS 5.5-22 with NPR2 reticle
Harris Bipod with Pod Claws/Skid Feet

Loads:
168gr SMK or AMAX-43.5grs IMR4895-Lapua Brass-CCI BR2- 2.800" COAL
175gr SMK- 45.0 grs Varget- Lapua Brass- CCI BR2- 2.895" COAL

The 168 load, it shoots .5 MOA at 100 yds with both bullets and 1 MOA at 1000yds with the AMAX

The 175 load is still in development but is showing sub moa groups at 100yds. I have a match at Camp Perry in September and this load is going to be used at 1000yds. during the match. The 168 AMAX worked surprisingly well at 1000 at my last match, though the grease ring around the holes on the target showed the bullets were starting to yaw just a little bit. The 168 SMK was hitting the paper completely sideways at 1000 haha. I didn't have time to work up a 175gr load before my last match so I was stuck with the 168s!

I love my rifle, and I can't believe how well it shoots with a stock barrel/action!

I used to have lower rings but the higher rings are more comfy for me because I have a high cheek weld. And with the adjustable cheek piece, it's a no brainer for me.

So thanks for the comment, but they're no good for me.

Re: 700 Bolt Fluted & Knob Installed!!! (PICS!!)

I've figured out what I'm going to do as far as Duracoating this rifle:

1. Do a 3 color GAP camo on the AICS stock (brown or tan, black, OD green)
2. Clear coat the bolt with Duracoat's self lubricating clear

That's it. Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

Re: 700 Bolt Fluted & Knob Installed!!! (PICS!!)

I thought about that and I'm still half-tempted to do so. But something about the shiny flutes on that bolt just make me want to leave it alone! haha. I'll give it some time and see how it grows on me.

Are you getting any brass wear from the flutes? I've been thinking about doing the bolt on my new project. Any comments or feed back would be great! Contact info for Kampfeld?

I haven't shot the rifle yet but I'm going to cycle it a few times this evening and see if there is any brass wear. I'll let you know what I find.

in my opinion, that is the only realistic answer.

do you mind telling me how removing material adds rigidity?

you might shave 1.5 to 1.6 oz by fluting the bolt. maybe you can tell the difference between a 16 lb rifle and a 15 lb 14.5 oz one, but i highly doubt i could. i think choosing a better profile barrel when building a rifle would be a cheaper and easier way to save weight.

i am sorry but you are flat out wrong if you think a fluted bolt is more rigid than a non-fluted bolt, not that bolt rigidity has much to do with anything in a remington style action since the main stresses are on the lugs and forward.

a spiral fluted cylinder will be less rigid than straight fluted and a non-fluted will be more rigid than both of them. increasing the surface area does nothing for increasing rigidity of the bolt.

That's some funny shit.
