Gunsmithing .700" muzzle barrel to "skinny" for Short Mag?

What's all of your opinions? I had a post in the bolt action section about my 7mm SAUM build. I had a few responses about my #5 Brux barrel, .700" at the muzzle, being too thin for a tactical comp gun or shooting very many times in a row.

I thought I would post this just to see what a more broad range of folks/gunsmiths thought. I like the barrel and am figuring on 11 lbs, but a Medium Palma probably wouldn't way but 1 lb more...but do I need the wight?

This will be a hybrid - Tac comp and long range hunting.

Go shhot the _hit out of it n see what happens! Only way to really know.

Its been my experience that lighter contours don't tolerate the hot rod magnums when shooting at a high rate.

I offer that in NRA highpower match rifle the 800ag course has back to back rapid strings totaling 20 rounds for record in 140 seconds (300 yard) of firing time.

There's prolly very few rsaums, but lots of hot rod 6mms are present.

Guns sure seem to shoot just fine there!

Ive got a german built Weatherby MK-V in 300 Wby mag that has a 26" barrle that finishes at .620"

it will shoot under 1-MOA for three shots about a min apart with factory ammo

5 shots in a min opens to 2-MOA and grab the barrle and you will have a scar to remind you not to do that again

for a deer rifles i think .700" is plenty probably even up to 35 cal

Thanks for the info that's what I was worried about. I've got this barrel, but looks like I may need a Sendero or Medium Palma I guess.

Anyone else have any experience with this?

I don't know the general opinion of it, but if your worried about barrel heat and grouping have the barrel cryo'd before the machine work. I've had a couple stinkers in the past that started to 'walk' after the 3rd round. A trip to Badger Cryogenics in nearby (Baraboo) solved the problem with both guns. It didn't matter how hot the barrel got, the rounds stayed in the group with lightweight sporter barrels.

Go shoot it. I have one mountain coutour that defies all logic, and several heavier contours that follow it.....give it a poke and see. It's only money.

What about barrel heat and longevity/durability? I was under the impression that copper fouling and barrel erosion are worse with a really hot barrel.

Thanks for the info guys! I ended up selling the #5 I had and am going with a Sendero/RV Obermeyer instead. Should be much better from what it sounds!
